Oh god seriously?!? I’m 37 and never heard this, but I’m also pretty naive. Can you guys corroborate this? |
| Joshua |
It's not as common as say, Dick, but it's a thing. https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/24308/peoples-names-as-names-for-genitalia |

OP here.
I’m also interested in what your impression of the name is. Like, for example, “Colton” to me sounds like a cowboy. Do you have a negative/positive connotation for either? |
| To me Joshua is a Jewish name. Haven’t met a young Peter since my elementary school days. |
| Both names have negative connotations for me. As previous posters have stated, Peter is definitely slang for penis. I'm 30 and I've known that since I was a teenager. Joshua reminds me of Josh Duggar who is a cheating child molester, but most people would not think of that. Therefore, I'd go with Joshua. |
|
I like both names. We seriously considered naming our son Peter, but I for some reason don't love Pete so we picked something else. I love Josh as a nickname.
Joshua makes me think of Rachel's boyfriend on Friends, and she insisted on calling him Joshua. I know a very handsome Josh too. Peter makes me think of St. Peter, St. Petersburg, Russia, penis, Pete and Pete the Nickelodeon show with 2 freckled redheads. Between the two, I prefer Joshua, nn Josh. |
| Peter is a great name. Definitely Peter over Joshua. |
Peter is the son of wealthy, classy parents. WASP. Joshua is a little white trash. |
| I like them both. I might assume Joshua was Jewish -- I'm Jewish and I know a LOT of Jewish Joshuas. Don't know any Jewish Peters, or many Peters at all, for that matter. Doesn't seem that common these days. So I'd give a slight edge to Peter, for you. |
Dick is super common. People on this board always say Peter is slang for penis, and yes, you can find things to corroborate it, but I have never heard it used in real life. Whereas people are called dicks all the time. |
| I have a Joshua. We aren't Jewish or white trash. I love the name, as I think it's solid, not trendy, and easy to spell. I also like Peter for the same reasons. |
It’s an old person thing. Millennials and genX don’t get it. |
|
Joshua sounds better to me, but Peter is easier to use(pronounce) internationally.
As a foreigner, that’s something I notice. |
| I like both but grew up around 530000 Joshuas so I'd lean toward Peter. |
