Emily in Paris

It's all riding the usual stereotypes, but it's mindless fun basically.

Agree it's mindless fun. Sort of a lazy production built on untrue stereotypes. Could have been better, but I enjoyed it for what it was even though Emily was SO annoying. I liked her friend as well. I think she was in Mean Girls, the show. I thinks she should have been the lead.

Agree. It is uncomfortable.

It is. And she has lines on her neck like a woman in her 30s or 40s due to her extreme lack of fat.

Do you talk about fatties like that?

Do “fatties” look much older than they actually are?

Yes, I have said it is uncomfortable to watch the This is Us actress.

NP: yes. Fat sags. An obese 22 year old will look older than a slim 30 year old.

I remember a few years back she played a girl that had an eating disorder in a movie and she told a magazine she’d had an eating disorder herself for years and was worried the movie would set herself back. She’s always looked very skinny to me so I’m sure she still struggles with it.

Makes sense. Gorgeous girl, it’s a shame.

It is so dumb for all of the reasons stated above, but 2020 has me down and I need a dumb show with fun fashion to watch. Perfect for that!

Not an EU resident but seconded. Just watch the first episode and the conversations about what French people are like are bizarre. And the portrayal of almost everyone in her office as a snob. Just comical and based on untrue and cliched stereotypes.

I actually think it would be interesting to show a young American living out the move-to-Paris dream and show how the reality differs from the fantasy many Americans have. It is interesting to see how people change when they move to Paris, sometimes for the better (more nuanced understanding of cultural differences, appreciation of things the French value, but also a more sophisticated view of things like racism and misogyny which operate differently in the EU), and sometimes for the worse (I have met some people who just concluded the French are all rude snobs, and dig into their insecurities and limited experience.

Anyway, I don’t think this show will be that. Though I did appreciate all the people calling her out on having zero French language skills, which is beyond lazy. And she does SO MUCH American-style “smile until you like me!” which truly does not work in France or in virtually any country outside of the Americas.

Your last thought seems to contradict your first one. I think Americans do project themselves as friendlier than the French. However, I did not agree with the level of snobbery in the French office. The extreme play on stereotypes was insulting.

It’s like Younger but with terrible actors who aren’t interesting.

People have VERY strong...feelings about this show.

There have been a couple of Twitter threads/reviews that are just savage.

I was impressed they had a black person as one of her office mates. Yes, France is very multi-cultural but that doesn't play into the stereotypes. The other scenes (like at parties and fashion shows), and nearly everyone was white so I guess that made up for it that way.

Holy hell, Gabriel is hot. Kind of wish Mindy was the lead.
