Child abuse? Hilarious. My dd has been playing in a mask for a month and has been completely fine. It’s not a big deal unless you make it a big deal.

Is hypoxia deal enough for you?

Nobody is forcing a child to play soccer. If a child chooses to play soccer and accepts the fact that they need to wear a mask, then there is a high chance that if a child is having trouble breathing then they can ask the coach for a break and go and sit down and take off said mask to breathe and drink some water. Miraculously, none of the girls on my dd’s team have suffered from hypoxia!

Sports are a choice. Just like you choose to follow the rules of the game, you choose to follow the rules of the league.

So MoCo changed the rule? Are people hearing it from their clubs? I haven't heard anything from Potomac Soccer.

So your empirical sample of 15 girls in MoCo playing soccer for a few weeks has value compared to the recommendations of the CDC, WHO, and AAP. Sure ... keep telling yourself that. Nobody is saying kids are gonna drop like flies wearing masks. But there seems to be enough there that so many experts do not recommend it for vigorous activities.

No one dies driving 65/70 MPH either but the speed limit is 55.

It’s very easy. If you don’t want to wear a mask, then don’t play.

Don’t be a Rebel without a Cause. Not that hard for you to move your DC to VA to play if you’re so against masks. No one is forcing you to play in MoCo.

Can we please just get back to purpose of this post - was this rule changed for all of MOCO? Why are we only hearing it from Soccerplex?

According to their website, MSI will still require:

Wednesday, Sept 15 ... Despite rumors to the contrary, PLEASE NOTE: MSI's protocol has not changed, and masks are required during competitive play!

It's equally easy that if you don't want to play with kids not wearing masks, then don't play.

Good question. Here is the best I can tell. MoCo appears to have subtly changed the guidance; there are constant communications between Soccerplex and county officials, so they've presumably been given the green light to do it that way. I can't find anything official other than this subtle change, but this sentence was not there before. Here is the change:

All sports participants, regardless of age, must comply with the face covering requirement and social distancing and hygiene requirements. The County follows the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations regarding the use of face coverings during vigorous activities.

That sentence is new. So then you go to the AAP recommendations:

https://www.aappublications.org/news/2020/07/22/sportsguidance072220

Face coverings are advised:

For coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators.
For all people arriving at and departing from an athletic facility or on the sidelines.
During non-vigorous exercise when physical distancing is not possible.

And

https://www.healthychildren.org/English/health-issues/conditions/COVID-19/Pages/Youth-Sports-Participation-During-COVID-19-A-Safety-Checklist.aspx

When possible and safe, athletes should each wear cloth face covering--especially on the sideline, in dugouts, and during team chats. However, masks should not be worn during:

active exercise.

water sports.

sports where face coverings could get caught on equipment or accidentally cover eyes.

Is Sam select league playing this fall?

Sam Select and Rec are merged into one small league for Fall

So far, just the Soccerplex, who I think is loosely interpreting the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations. And the only reason they have made this change is because for the NCSL & EDP games, no one will come to Montgomery County because they don't want to wear a mask. Which means not only no "home" games for Montgomery County teams, but, it also means no one using the Soccerplex fields. That means they're not making the boatload of money they make off renting those fields. No tournaments allowed in Montgomery County either, another loss of revenue for the Soccerplex.

My kids (one in HS, 2 in MS) have been playing with masks in Montgomery County, and have been fine. Has not interfered at all.

Dr. Gayles mentioned this Wednesday during a meeting that he will update the guideline to follow American Academy of Pediatrics's recommendations very soon. Soccerplex's change confirmed that.

For the "prefect rule following" folks: wearing mask during sport is not recommended by any creditable institutes.
