That's what this was. The study abroad trips were cancelled, but they still wanted the kids' $$$$, so they made them study abroad... in Boston! lol These kids were spending big bucks to live in a Boston Westin hotel, while being under lock down by campus police? Wow just wow.

What does this have to do with the OP?

The 11 kids kicked out were in this fake study abroad in Boston thing, living at a Boston hotel 1 mile from campus.

No refunds of tuition will be provided.

Good for Northeastern. Massachusetts didn’t shut down so Logan airport could open up and let the students come in to party.

They expelled th for a gathering of 11 off campus?? Freaking insane. I would be irate.

Good, you *should* be irate (at your idiot child).

It’s not like covid doesn’t spread during in-person classes and lunch.

Colleges that are making a serious go of it during COVID are doing grab and go meals. My kid has a camp chair and has been eating outside like a lot of kids, he’s eating outside, socially distant.

They are also making classes a combo of remote, hybrid and in person so that they can maintain the six feet of space between each kid, and are requiring masks when you leave the dorm room, no exception. My kid has a single, can only enter his own residence hall, and has been strongly discouraged from having anyone else in his dorm room. There is some wiggle room for a romantic partner. And that’s it. My kids college would suspend or expel for this. And they should. My kid would have risked the in person semester for everyone else.

Rules are rules. If you don’t like them don’t come to campus!

Well, technically they were not on campus. They were in a hotel in Boston...

My DS attends a state university in PA. They just finished week 3 of classes. I was skeptical of them making it to Thanksgiving but as each week passes I become less so. Students can get tested at any time. The University is also conducting randomized testing for asymptomatic students by invitation. There have been 3 cases (2 on campus and 1 off). They are holding classes in a similar way to what you mention and meals are grab and go. My DS says mask compliance is basically 100% on campus and when he sees other students in town it’s the same. If anything they are wary of the townspeople who are unmasked.

It’s not a very large school and is located in a small town. Maybe that’s a difference? Obviously there are varying factors but it’s interesting to think about why some schools have hundreds of cases or a larger percentage of students positive while others have such a small number.

Which has been leased by the university as dorms.

The number of adults on this thread that think that students should be able to do whatever the hell they want, even when they have signed a document stating they agree to abide by the rules...and then the number of adults thinking the university is wrong for actually holding the students accountable on this thread explains exactly why our entire country is in the toilet right now.

PP here.
I will clarify that grab and go meals are available, but they do have more traditional dining too with mitigation.

This is happening all over the country, to spread kids out. There was an article in the Boston Globe this week about kids living at the Westin, the W and some swanky boutique hotels. They seemed to be loving it! My college, in a small midwestern town, has students in 2 local hotels (which are a lot less nice than the W!!).

Here you go.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/W_Hotels

The W in DC is the old Hotel Washington on 15th Street. It was updated to fit with the Ws vibe of course. I’ve stayed at the W in Boston. It’s a pretty nice hotel for a dorm (it’s being used by Emerson College for about 200 students).

NYU suspended over 20 on Thursday/Friday as well. Consequence is 1 year for throwing a party and 1 semester for just attending: and classes have started so tuition is due.

My kid is there. I would be upset with kid if they got suspended for this..... Just like if they didn’t go to class and flunked our or got caught cheating, when they knew they signed that they understood l the consequences for breaking the rules. This is great lesson in being an “adult”

Good for Northeastern! I applaud their actions. This small group was violating the rules and risking the health and lives of those around them. They should be kicked out.
