It’s not like covid doesn’t spread during in-person classes and lunch.
Colleges that are making a serious go of it during COVID are doing grab and go meals. My kid has a camp chair and has been eating outside like a lot of kids, he’s eating outside, socially distant. They are also making classes a combo of remote, hybrid and in person so that they can maintain the six feet of space between each kid, and are requiring masks when you leave the dorm room, no exception. My kid has a single, can only enter his own residence hall, and has been strongly discouraged from having anyone else in his dorm room. There is some wiggle room for a romantic partner. And that’s it. My kids college would suspend or expel for this. And they should. My kid would have risked the in person semester for everyone else.
My DS attends a state university in PA. They just finished week 3 of classes. I was skeptical of them making it to Thanksgiving but as each week passes I become less so. Students can get tested at any time. The University is also conducting randomized testing for asymptomatic students by invitation. There have been 3 cases (2 on campus and 1 off). They are holding classes in a similar way to what you mention and meals are grab and go. My DS says mask compliance is basically 100% on campus and when he sees other students in town it’s the same. If anything they are wary of the townspeople who are unmasked. It’s not a very large school and is located in a small town. Maybe that’s a difference? Obviously there are varying factors but it’s interesting to think about why some schools have hundreds of cases or a larger percentage of students positive while others have such a small number.
