| Man, I wish I knew about SPD when I was pregnant...I complained to my OB it felt like someone was slowly ripping my body apart at the groin and she said "well, someone basically is..." I was definitely in serious pain walking starting around 33 weeks...gave birth at 37 weeks. |
I'm the PP above whose SPD started at 18 weeks. I did a lot of googling. Then I called my OB and she said "yeah...that's common and is just going to get worse as you go along. You can call us for a PT referral later if you need one." I got the PT referral anyway. I questioned whether I was overreacting and being whiny because maybe pregnant people feel this way all the time? I waited a couple weeks to call. At that point, I was practically in tears when walking up stairs. When I started with the PT she confirmed what was going on and now the pain is there but more manageable. Some level of discomfort is normal in pregnancy but if something HURTS you don't have to suck it up and accept it. |
I'm PP from before and I agree with this. I haven't sought a PT referral at this point because my SPD didn't start until near the bitter end so hopefully it will go away after birth, but I think it's important to make the distinction between "normal" pregnancy discomfort and not. Pain and difficulty walking during pregnancy is not normal. My mom is staying with us right now and observing how I move around and has noted she had discomfort during her pregnancy but not like the painstaking, measured movements I now have to take to get out of the car, get in bed, etc. My OB sort of brushed it off and I haven't pushed because it's more pressure than acute pain, but I'll be getting a PT referral if this doesn't improve soon after delivery. |
| If you have SPD and live around here, please go see a chiropractor named Mariela Young in Rockville (or any prenatal chiropractor). I couldn't even roll out of bed, get out of the car, or go up stairs, it was incredibly painful to even walk. It doesn't always go away after birth, thankfully mine did. But, I was seeing her every 2 weeks until the end. A prenatal chiropractor can really help with this. |
| OP I had this starting at 30 weeks and it was awful. Definitely seek a PT if you can, mine didn’t go away until I gave birth. Best wishes for you! |
