College requiring Covid-19 tracking app and SD agreement for students

Anonymous
I’m totally fine with this. Our Firm has a similar tracking app that will be used in our offices when we return.

I wonder if the app will be able to remotely identify people breaking the 25 person rule. For example, a report is generated if 30 people are found to be at a specific location.

Just seems like common sense.

If this is required after covid has passed is another question.

My guess is people will just start leaving their cell phones back at the room. Do social gatherings old school style where you agreed on the date/time/place to meet in advance.

OMG that's hysterical! College kids sneaking off of campus in the middle of the night leaving their call phones at home to meet up somewhere...

Truth is, kids will just get two phones, won't they?

Yes. I wonder if the app can tell that the phone has been unused for an hour. Something young people never do.

I agree that it is a major infringement on our freedoms. I guess you don't have to go to college there.

And when if becomes a huge and obvious party and the police show up and ticket everyone they catch (by standing at the doors), you are expelled.

My probably awkward (but always makes friends and is fine) kid does not use social media and does not like phones, so she could handle this!

Seems like China. But here we are.

I love this idea. Health and safety trumps all IMO.

You don't really think that. You only feel this way because you are still earning money and able to pay others to do high risk things for you. If we were all under a true lockdown for months, my guess is that you'd feel differently.

Who are you to tell me what I think? Due to DH's pending heart surgery that has been delayed twice, I have been under pretty darn close to a true lockdown. Go out once a week for groceries.

So sick of stupid people. So many stupid people in this country. It's shocking.

That's why frat houses have windows.

Right, like if after an hour of inactivity it buzzes, and you must enter your personal pin to show you are there (this is a feature of some on line training courses for example - you must enter something periodically to prove you are actually still watching). But what about mid-day napping? The period of time would have to be long enough for a nap, which is also long enough for a party.

In any case. sure there will be ways around it, but it will prevent most abuses. Only those very determined to violate it will do so, and so it narrows the number of bad apples and probably increases their chance of getting caught, especially if they get sick and their contact tracing doesn't match thier phone history.

Yes, but not everyone gets away.

This is so stupid. Just leave the cell phone in your dorm room. Voila!

Not a "major infringement on our freedoms" One your child is an adult so not "your freedoms" Two college is a choice not a right so if you don't want to follow their rules then go somewhere else. This is simple and not something to complain about. Your young adult gets to make that decision. Oh wait I doubt you treat your kid that way. They most likely do not make any decisions for themselves, ie society is screwed.

Oh my you are a negative Nelly. I let DC choose what parties he attends so society will be just fine.

Message to your kids: you are lucky that your school is willing to let you live on campus. It will probably not be as fun as a normal semester, but it sure beats being stuck at home! If you and/or your friends try to go around the rules and have parties, etc, there is a good chance the school will shut down the entire campus and send everyone home (in addition to any disciplinary measures against you personally if you are caught). Don’t be a jerk to your classmates by causing them to get sent home.

These apps predated COVID and are now being deployed for public health reasons. https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/28/21112456/spotteredu-degree-analytics-student-location-tracking-app-attendance
