Op here- yes this is why I am asking. Lots of kids enter school at various grades. Hoping older parents had some perspective. |
| Virtually none at Murch. Only three kids that I know of from this year’s graduating class are not going on to Deal — 2 are going private and 1 to a charter. |
| Lafayette used to publish a destination list for the graduation 5th graders. |
|
Are you asking - how many leave after 4th for privates / charters?
Or how many 5th graders do not enroll in their neighborhood middle school? |
We are a Murch family and we are not going to Deal. I don't think you could possibly know how many families are going elsewhere. |
| At Key, there is usually 1-10 kids that leave after 3rd and 4th. When the kids go to middle school, it has varied over the past years, but this year they sent their largest cohort in memory...almost 35 out of 48 are going to Hardy. |
| Mann had 3 4th grades. They are having 3 5th grades. I know of maybe 5 kids (mine included) who are leaving before 5th. Most are staying and many many plan to go to Hardy. My child is not happy to be leaving Mann before 5th. This was not an easy decision and was made more for our family reasons than anything with Mann/Hardy. |
As a stoddert > hardy family. I find it interesting that more Mann/Key/Easton families are going to Hardy. There was a big difference between 6th and 8th grade in class makeup. |
| my second kid just left Murch. in my experience virtually all 4th graders go to 5th grade (with first child only 1 kid went private that I know of at the end of 4th grade, none with second child that I know of). also, virtually all kids went to Deal. after Deal there is a lot more diversification. my oldest went to Wilson and her friends went to Wilson, Walls, Banneker, Duke Ellington. but there was really no peeling off after 4th grade. |
This coming/rising 5th key cohort is already down to 30 from around 78 at the grade cohort Height, and at least 5-10 not going to hardy - but this grade could be an anomaly. The leaving 5th grade class this year going to hardy is much larger. |
So you are saying 48 of 78 kids are not returning to 5th grade at Key? |
| We moved after 4th because our youngest was starting K. We didn't move far just to the other side of Western. It has been a breath of fresh air. While it could be a case of self fulfilling prophecy, We have been very happy in the Whitman cluster and if we had to do it over we would have moved sooner. |
Um, ok. Good for you. |
Umm, okay. Maybe yours is one of the families I know about? Probably not, though, because they aren't rude. As I stated, I know of three kids from this year's graduating class who are not going to Deal. Certainly, there are quite possibly more. But we know the majority of 5th graders, so have a pretty good sense of where people are going. FWIW, this is a sea change from even 8-10 years ago, when many more Murch kids went on to privates, charters or MoCo/VA publics after fifth grade. This is from a neighbor who used to be head of the HSA at Murch. |
I have access to the actual numbers...the rising 5th grade class is closer to 40 (more like 42), compared to the number of 45 when they were in fourth grade. That's a loss of only 3 kids. |
