and what brand would those be?

Ladies, it's all about quality, not quantity. Cheap shoes just look, well, cheap. I can spot them half a mile away -and so can others. Better to have 2 great pairs of quality shoes than 6 pairs of cheap ones!

Well, I guess it all depends on your definition of "cheap" shoes. I would rather have 6 pairs of $100 shoes than 2 pairs of $300 shoes or 1 pair of $600 shoes, or for that matter, 30 pairs of $20 shoes!

What makes you think people who buy cheap shoes (i.e. me) have lots of them? I have 2 pairs as it is. And I certainly am not going to pay $300 for another pair because some stranger thinks my $100 shoes look "cheap." After all, I am "cheap" so I might as well look it.

Most women I know have closets stuffed to the brim with nondescript clothing and only wear 20% of it according to statistics. This is typically American. In Europe, women have small, edited closets and only buy a couple things each season. But everything they buy is of great quality.

The same women who claim they can't buy better shoes are often the same ones who go to Starbucks every day and go out to eat at restaurants at least weekly.

Of course, it all depends upon your personal preferences. And I will say that people who know you will never tell you how your shoes come across - but they speak about you.

Once you buy your first pair of quality shoes, I guarantee you that you will never go back to the old brands.

PP here. Meant to tie together the money spent on coffee and food which could be put towards shoes.

"But they speak about you" is meant to refer to the shoes speaking about you - not other people.

I actually don't disagree with you, as a woman who wears not-Jimmy-Choos. I think you're right -- there is a contingent of women who can spot my $75 shoes from 20 paces and believe that says something about me.

What I have found with most of these women whom I personally know is that while they have beautiful, often expensive clothes and bags, there are other aspects of their lives where they skimp. Or just can't flat-out afford the best. I mean, unless you are really rich (and many people here are somewhat), you gotta cut back someplace. It could be your home or condo or rental apt. It could be your car. Could be your vacations.

Both my DH and I love cars a little too much. Luxury cars. A Mercedes S-class is not the same thing as a Honda Fit, although both will get you to Harris Teeter and back. Neither of us cares deeply about having the world's best-quality shoes, although again, I do agree with you that Louboutins are not the same thing as Keens.

15:20 here and I agree with you, pp. It is all about choice and preference. We also cut back on certain things like restaurants in order to buy things that make our heart sing.

For those who want or need to have better shoes for professional or health reasons, it is often obtainable through making a choice about where we spend our money. For those who visit Starbucks every day, making your own coffee will allow you to buy 8 pairs of high quality shoes during the space of one year.

I buy very little each year in terms of clothing and accessories and do wear 100% of what is in my closet. And my closet is very manageable. When I do shop, I buy high quality items that I love to pieces and wear for years.

Suze Orman, among others, has written about buying better and not more as well as choosing our spending priorities.

Bullshit! I've lived in Europe. Overall, I agree that many women dress more stylishly (ok, most), but they do not all wear expensive clothing. I love these poster that think just because something is European it's better. They have plenty of made in China clothes and shoes in Europe, too. Go walk the streets of any major European city and you will know that not "everything they buy is of great quality."

European women have "edited" closets because they generally are small and not built in, so they don't have tons of space. Also, things are more expensive there.

Get over yourself . . . seriously.

Wait a second wait a second. I have fashion sneakers that give lots of support when I am on my feet. I have CUTE shoes that are not for tons of walking, but some light errand running. I have shoes that I literally only walk from car to destination. I have shoes that literally only wait for the car service or cabs and drive directly to place b/c mama cannot wear them long AT ALL. Doesn't everyone do this? I mean, do we have to choose? And why not the fashion sneakers??? They are cute, I get orthopedics in them (from Fleet Feet) to give some ooomph, and then I do not look so frumpadoo. They go with yoga pants, jeans, whatev.

18:59 - I've also spent much quality time in Europe and I will say that countries differ from each other as well as our experiences (and verbally ability to express ourselves) there.

People like you make me want to barf.

If $100 shoes are cheap shoes, I say all hail cheap shoes that feel good. And I rarely go to Starbucks.

Take your ridiculous, snobby generalizations and shove them up your rump-hole.

PP, let's not add cheap to something other than your shoes. Let's keep this clean and dignified, please.
