How can someone be born and raised in the DC area yet still be racist?

Anonymous
These days everyone is “racist” and needs to “keep learning and listening” including all non black minorities.

America is the racist shit hole; not other countries.

Everywhere else is better than us, and fair.

Honest question, how can someone still have such views when the area is so diverse?

Unfortunate realization: virtually 99% of all crime in DC is committed by youngish black males. I returned here after college fully woke and somewhat strident about it, but over the last many years, I've reached the point where I can't reconcile the progressive dogma with the realty of DC's crime statistics. And I really have no patience left for street criminals and shooters.

I don't think noticing this makes me racist, but I'm sure others disagree.

There's a movie quote: "First you make criminals and then you punish them".

You aren't wrong to notice aa crime but the problem is that the crime stems from economic inequality stemming from systemic slavery stemming from slavery. So pointing out aa crime comes off racist to some as it does nothing to acknowledge/address/solve the continued issues still existing today- it only victim blames. Yes criminals are victims too- just not always tragic or sympathetic figures. Hard to feel sorry for someone when they rob you/assault you. I know this has turned some of my coworkers very racist- the things they say would NEVER have come out of their mouths before they too were victimized.

Except poor people of other races don't commit violent crimes at the rate of black Americans. The numbers aren't even close.

Similar experience here. I took many hours of critical race theory and civil rights law in college, but living in DC has led me to some uncomfortable realizations. There honestly are some differences between urban Black culture and the predominant culture that make it hard for the two to coexist. I’m not saying either is right or wrong, just that they’re different and they sometimes clash.

It’s how poverty is expressed by a specific culture. I grew up in MoCo in a lower middle class white family that lived in a lower class and diverse neighborhood and the way that young males are taught by street culture to act leads to much of the crime problem. I have quite a few friends that I grew up with go to jail for assault and drug crimes and individually they were not that way when young kids. I watched as other young men became teenagers and started to follow street culture and it lands them in trouble. I barely got out myself because it’s hard to resist the way things are as a young man. Many of my friends were emulating gang culture and got trapped and much of that pop culture messaging was served to them by other minorities not white people.

I took the same type of classes in college, but I knew better because I grew up in an area bordering (thank god) a very bad neighborhood. Crime rates were about double back then. I don't know how anyone could not have a negative view of the black community when you live in or next to a predominately black high crime area. BTW- not sure what you mean by urban black culture.

Because DC is a racist city. We (try to) keep black poors in their quadrants/place. We made up ‘boundaries’ (not in or out of the districts) to keep the blacks/poors out of the NW schools. Because gentrification has pushed out all the blacks/poors for your loft studio.

I’ve lived in small towns in fly over country and DC. DC is way more racist.

Then you must have traveled very little. America obviously has real issues on this front, but it is nothing compared to many countries around the world.

This. And how long are we going to keep blaming slavery for AA poverty? We are at a couple hundred years now. When will any of it start to be their responsibility?

Did you see this? Open, blatant racism in VA and Maryland just 60 years ago. The American Nazi Party headquarters was in Arlington. Some people in this photo are still alive, and since racism is often taught and handed down generationally, no doubt it exists in many of the children, grandchildren of these people.

^This is a sweeping generalization. I would argue that DC proper may be but *most* of the people in DC are not natives. That means they are coming here from somewhere else...maybe your fly over towns?
