Parts of the bridge are in VA, MD and even a bit of DC -- the tiny southernmost point of the District. It is overseen now by VA and MD, according to Wikipedia: "After the completion of the Wilson Bridge project, the State of Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia became the joint owners of the completed bridge, and both states exercise joint responsibility and oversight of bridge activities, maintenance, and operations. The District of Columbia, a jurisdiction that once had ownership rights to the 1961 Wilson Bridge span, relinquished future ownership rights and responsibility for the new bridge." I think there is a joint VA/MD committee that oversees bridge issues and that would be the body to deal with any renaming if and when that happens. I suspect that neither state would really resist changing the name in the current climate, and with the current governors each state has right now. With the publicity of the Princeton change, the idea of changing the bridge name is going to be coming up very soon, I'm sure! |
What’s changed is we have let the outrage machine take over. As you said, the 2015 review was extensive and looked at Wilson’s acts at Princeton and beyond, looked at the historical context, and sought opinions and involvement of students and alumni. At the end of that lengthy process, a reasoned decision was made. Now, in a matter of weeks, with no reanalysis of Wilson’s deeds and misdeeds (and let’s be real, he is long dead and his actions haven’t changed in five years) and little attempt to survey opinions beyond the letter writers you cite, they have completely overturned the prior process. I wish I still had an old Woody Woo t-shirt so I could wear it at our next reunions. |
| If Princeton really cared about institutional racism, it would end legacy admissions. Renaming a school is easy, eliminating legacies is much harder. Until Princeton leads on that, I am not impressed. |
So say today's Democrats, conveniently! Byrd, Heflin, Gore Sr, and Hollings, to name just a few old segregationists, kept their Dem leadership positions until retirement. |
DP. So? All long gone now. How long do you think you can keep tossing their names around as "evidence" and think anyone will care? It's common knowledge that the party had a powerful old racist wing. Known, regretted, disavowed. The Dems now live in the present but you don't seem to be capable of that. |
| The Democrat Party doesn't have a hint of racism in it. They are all Republicans now. Why? Because I say so, damn it. Don't say otherwise or you will hurt my feelings. And, you are a racist, so there. |
Brilliant

| I went there and am happy for the change of name. |

I was surprised by this. There has been no new info since the 2015 review.
I guess we know what will be in the PAW letters to the editor for the rest of the year. |
Who do all the Confederate-loving racists vote for? That’s right. But sure — the Democrats are SO aligned with racism. Also, Strom Thurmond was a Republican until he died 17 years ago. Remember him? |
| Well, he liked black women. I thought Democrats didn't like whataboutism. |
There is no such thing as the “Democrat Party”. Stop reading Trump’s tweets and QAnon conspiracies. |
| Coming from Canada, this comes across as a bit contradictory when your current President is a bigot and a rapist. Hoping they don't name anything important after him... |
Lifelong Skins fan, but the name change is overdue. |
No. He raped/seduced a Black servant who was a minor. She had his daughter whom he never acknowledged publicly. |
