MCPS 2020-2021 School Year

Update just went out to all parents:
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/publicinfo/community/school-year-2019-2020/coronavirus-update-20200621.html

Looks like preliminary plan by 7/14, with discussion at BOE meeting that day, and final plan on 8/14.

Also includes link to parent survey

The survey seems to address everything that parents have concerns about. I just wish they required parents to provide student ID#s to make sure fake replies were weeded out.

Did you see the mess that was Fairfax this spring? Mcps is far from perfect but they ran circles around fcps in terms of implementing distance learning.

Do you really think there are that many people who will bother with fake replies?

Judging by the DCUMers who said they would riot if there isn’t full time face to face school in the fall, lots.

This was all covered in today’s MCPS email.

While some Virginia counties seem to be coming out with plans now, I like that MD is waiting a bit longer to see the lay of the land. A lot can change in 6 or 7 weeks! I know they're working up options, but dont know exactly what is being considered for MCPS.

Thanks - but 8/14 seems very late in the game with school scheduled to start 8/31.

I can definitely find childcare for 2 elementary kids with random schedules in 2 weeks! Who can't?

My middle schooler didn’t have any substantive Zoom classes so the bar must be extremely low.

Does anybody understand how much leeway the county will have to implement a plan as opposed to a mandate from the State Dept of Ed (Salmon)?
And, to what degree do the pronouncements of the State Dept of Ed impact private schools in Maryland?

I understand that private schools have more leeway, but how much? Can State Dept of Ed "mandate" DL? Or just recommend it? And if State Dept of Ed recommends DL, and MoCo implements 100% DL, could private schools in MoCo do something different (hybrid or fully in-person)?

The state is unlikely to mandate DL. They will leave it to the counties. There's no need to have DL in rural counties with < 100 cases.

The state's plan so far are _guidelines_ not requirements. Then the local school district can decide how to proceed.

Those counties are also less likely to be able to do DL due to poverty and lack of internet coverage. We spent my birthday weekend in a vacation rental in Dorchester. The coverage was so spotty.

Mcps has to file their plan. They don’t need state approval for their plan. Neither do privates, but I think privates will have greater ease reopening.

Their schoosl have been closed by state order since mid-March, like everywehre else in MD. I agree internet is an issue there -- a lot of those school systems just gave out paper packets and had the kids turn them in at the end of the semester.
