Peds response to fever

Anonymous
Just got back from the ped for a covid test for my 7 yo’s fever. I think it’s pretty standard now. His strep test was negative, so he picked up some virus from somewhere.

OP I posted on this board a month or so ago because my 14 month old tested positive for COVID. She had fever and diarrhea for 36 hours and has been 100% healthy since. I also wanted to let you know that she did not give it to anyone else in the house even though we share spoons, kisses, play with toothbrushes, etc. what they are finding out is that kids (especially little ones) are just not very contagious and rarely infect others. Even if your kid comes back positive, it will almost for sure be very very mild and none of you will get it. Of course you should be careful if you can... i our case, our DD was already fine before getting the test so we never separated from her... we did quarantine for 2 weeks once we found out that she was positive, but that’s it... we were all negative with negative antibody

Also, while some people get really sick, for kids it’s often less serious than strep or the flu

OP here ... waiting to get a second opinion today but likely getting the test. Spiked a fever of 103 yesterday afternoon but then it was low or non existent overnight. She did have some diarrhea and vomiting in the middle of the night, but woke up fever free and asking for food and drink. It’s almost time in the afternoon/evening when the fever starts to creep back, so TBD.

I am the PP whose child tested positive. That is exactly what my DD had. Diarrhea, fever (on and off for 2 days) and threw up once... just something to think about

Thanks. Appreciate the info.

I don’t understand the hesitation. Your Pediatrician recommends a COVID test, your kid has symptoms. Get the test today. It takes 20 seconds or less in each nostril. I have had it done. It was not downright awful. Perhaps your tester was overly zealous. It’s certainly no worse than a shot or giving blood. Have it done today.

+1 get the test and find out what you are dealing with! And be sure to practice extreme caution with the newborn.

Follow up ... when in relation to the symptoms did your child get tested?

Honestly, I was in disbelief (and I’m hormonal; see comment about newborn at home). The test isn’t great and maybe I just need to accept it’s the way things are now. Just seems like an ear check and strep test would be a better start.

Her symptoms started Friday night and we got her tested Sunday morning. Results back on Tuesday morning and then we got the whole family (plus nanny) tested the same day... all negative one day later.
We tested everyone at our pediatrician. They did drive through (not sure if they still do)

PP from before. My DD was first visited because the pediatrician did not believe she had COVID... I was the one insisting for the test... the drive through was for the rest of the family. My DD’s ears were red and so was her throat, but that might have been because she hates going to the doctor and cries like crazy... or it could have been the virus. Her lungs were totally clear, she never coughed, never had a cold and apart from 2 days of fever and diarrhea was totally fine. Also, doctor believes that she is now out of the woods for any Kawasaki related infections. Good luck OP... the test is much worse on adults and older children than it is on very young ones like mine

I can understand why your ped wouldn't want to see your child in person without a Covid test. The ped doesn't want to be exposed.

This. It totally makes sense to just order the test first, provided there's not something going on that really requires an immediate visit.

I know it sucks to be in that position as a parent. I always wanted to get in immediately just in case it was something like an ear infection that they'd give me antibiotics for.

I get it too. Just struggling. Headed to get tested tomorrow.
