Congrats that's a surprise because figured WL wouldn't move there or W&M because in this environment cost would be an issue and folks would want to be closer to home. But it does make sense because if top schools move, that would filter down to safeties like UVA.

The waitlists are moving because schools are trying to overenroll. The summer melt is probably going to be higher than usual this year.

What is summer melt?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_melt

Summer melt is the phenomenon of prospective college students' motivation to attend college "melting" away during the summer between the end of high school and beginning of college. This phenomenon is especially prevalent in low-income minority communities, where students who qualify for college and in some cases even register for classes ultimately end up not attending college because they lack resources, support, guidance, and encouragement. Support programs by colleges, such as introducing peer mentoring programming, and using nudge methods like messaging students via text message, have been found to reduce summer melt.

I think it’s a type of melt sandwich popular during summer.

I am OP and my kid got two waiting on two-one Ivy and one top 20. The two he wants haven't come in. Going to the other top 20 (not the top 10). I am sure you can guess the top 10 no one wants to go to lol.

UChicago should not be in the top 10.

You got it...Bingo. That was the top 10. That is why as of now he is going to a top 20.

I would have guessed Cornell.

I was surprised, too, but the UVA waitlist has been moving for weeks— even before 5/1.

Only UVA boosters don’t know that UVA is a safety for a lot of kids!

DD just into NYU.

She was mentally prepared to go to Ohio State, though.

I can't pay $37k for a semester online at NYU.

This must be a hard year. You mentally make peace where you got in...and start getting excited, then you get off a waitlist.

When this happened to my kid (2 years ago), she decided to stay put .

My kid who is going to a top SLAC got a an extended waitlist at Georgetown. Said we will be in touch June 30. We can’t offer you a slot. And then some garbage about only a few people got this extended waitlist. But when I go to college confidential does Georgetown waitlist, it is lit up like a Xmas tree at FAO Schwartz in NYC with posts who got the same thing. Never heard of this. I think Georgetown is not sure if internationals are coming and they did this in case they can’t come. They claim financial aid is not a factor in admissions but they said get your FAFSA in. We are full pay.

Franklin and Marshall also jerked my kid around about getting off the waitlist. It turned us off and she declined outright

NYU is in person. It may be one of the few place not having a breakout this fall.

What is the source of your info?

NYU is in NY city. If NYU opens for in-person classes, so would other colleges and unis in the city.
