I thought only public schools in Fairfax, Montgomery County and D.C. administer annual "LNCB" standardized tests? Why are private schools following suit? |
ERBs are intended to provide parents some good data on whether the teaching and curriculum at their private school is keeping their child high on the curve compared to other good privates. Presumably, because such testing is wise but voluntary, there will be far less pressure to "teach solely to the test" and it is also helpful for students to have some exposure to such testing before the PSAT and SAT roll around.
But I get your point and it is not without merit. |
So, what are bad ERB math numbers?? |
So does this happen at every private? |

Does what happen? |
I have children in 2 different independent schools, neither Beauvoir. I noticed that one school sent along (other never did over several years) an additional sheet from ERB that shows how your child's class did compared to the other norm groups: National, Suburban, and Independent. Maybe this is a new offering by ERB, but when I rec'd this last year for the first time, I really felt the other school was hiding info that could have been shared. For Beauvoir parents, I would strongly suspect that the admin has this report for the school as a whole (after all, the justification these schools often give for such stdized testing is to "see how we are doing." You could ask for it to be distributed/reported. |
I'm the pp who refrenced the Beauvoir ERB scores that were announced at the State of School Meeting yesterday. All the data was from the class of 2009 (last years 3rd graders) and they did provide the Independant (I remember these scores were in the 80 percentiles), Suburban (these scores had a range in the high seventies - mid eighties) and Beauvoir's scores which on average were in the 99%. They were discussing exmissions, so this year's 2nd grade scores were not relevant. |
I'm always surprised (and feel a bit behind the eight ball) when I hear how parents supplement their children's private school curriculum. For example, what were the online programs that the PP used to prepare her son for the ERB? |
I used AAAmath.com, schoolhousetech.com, Singapore primary math & Spectrum math workbooks, 15-30 mins per day. |
Also, we played lots of math-based games that involved: addition, subtraction, multiplication facts, counting change, and telling time. |
New poster and current parent to a Beauvoir 2nd grader. DC was 96% percentile and top stanine for math. We do no supplementation at home (First in Math is miserable--though we do go to math mornings every so often, but I'm not counting those 30 mins as real supplementation since it's at school, with the teachers).
I have been frustrated at what sometimes seems like the slow pace of her math learning. At the same time, when I take the long view she seems to have none of the dread of math that I remember having about 2nd or 3rd grade. What I see is that she seems comfortable taking her time and contemplating the math homework, hopefully that approach (slow and careful) will carry over into higher level math when the time comes. At least now, I'm willing to trade off speed for enjoyment of learning the stuff--let's hope the enthusiasm carries over into geometry, trig and calc. |
What are considered low stanine scores in 2nd grade? |
Also, besides straight 9s, what scores are the Cathedral schools looking for? |
