Yes my 1970s childhood meant I rode my bike to the playground for the free summer outdoor program because we didn’t have money for real camps. I was gone all day at a young age.
I think some parents will just let their kids loose, as in latch key, and hope for the best as they return to work. |
The difference is that now you can at least set an expectation of some academic work during the day... that will be a lot harder in the summer. Parents will need to be much more creative and I"m not sure i'm up for the task... |
This is true. Which means that offices may be letting more people come back to work. But, by then camps will probably be cancelled. So lots of parents are going to be in a situation where they're expected to be in an office but they have zero coverage for their kids. |
I think offices that are reopening may themselves still want to encourage staff to telework so that everyone isn’t crammed back into cube farms. I’m planning as if I will be teleworking through July.

except no school to occupy them. |
There is basically no school now. A half hour daily zoom session does not count. |
I’m fine with that if the neighborhood kids can play together. |
There is no summer camp this summer. |
the other difference is it will be hot as hell. |
God has spoken. |
Right? I stayed home by myself the summer before 5th grade. I have a rising 5th grader now and that seems criminal these days. |
This might work for older elementary kids, but my kindergarten child? No summer camp and no semblance of fake school? I think I’ll have to take all my saved leave at that point and take a leave of absence from my job. |
This. If people are returning to work on offices, there will be camps. |
Don’t worry. Camps will spring up if families have salaries to pay for them! |
This. But if all the day camps are closed, you will probably have an easy time of finding one since a lot of them staff those places and would be out of work and needing a summer gig! |
