Crazy NYT article — cut throat academia and false Title IX allegations

Anonymous
The really scary thing is that the attempt only failed because the guy was stupid. He used his own phone number. He didn't hide his IP. He was sloppy in execution.

I think that was the point of the article: to get others to identify this person since the author and her wife were not allowed to do so.

Duane Gilson is obviously mentally ill. There is no other explanation for his behavior.

But he really hurt those women, and he deserves to go to jail for it.

He won't but his career is over now. He's never going to work in academia again.

What terrible publicity for MCLA. It's a small, public liberal arts college. My SIL went there. Very nice school. He should be fired immediately.

Can he be criminally prosecuted?

Agree with you re the article. Has he been fired?

What was seriously twisted was that Arizona U did nothing to investigate the anonymous source of the accusations against this woman. Instead, they launched right into investigating HER before checking the veracity of her accuser. Hell, they didn't even investigate the EXISTENCE of the accuser! Had they done so, they would have discovered that this accuser didn't even exist!! It was a nightmare for the falsely accused women that never would have happened had Arizona U done even a basic, cursory investigation of the accuser. Every reporter knows to check the validity of a source -- why didn't the U perform this basic check?

He's still on the school's website. It's not easy to fire someone in academia. I'll bet the school's lawyers are working on it as I type this. I hope so!

Good question. I'd think the women would have to bring charges against him, and they signed a settlement, which the article said precluded them from identifying him publicly.

Any lawyers here know?
Anonymous
Be interesting to know the terms of the settlement and how much money they got from this guy. Must have been a decent amount for them to agree not to name him.

I'm not sure all of that would really help since apparently people are allowed to file complaints anonymously.

I'd also read and appreciated this article. Terrifying. DH is in academia and pretty much the words "Title IX" puts a chill down anyone's spine these days. No doubt that there are many legitimate and important investigations. But our current climate is tricky with lots of room for abuse.

Totally long winded article
Totally designed for the guy to be doxxed online by readers
Crappy creepy situation tho
And yeah, Ann Arbor is awesome

That was a crazy read.

Floored me that the university kept investigating anonymous allegations by fictional people. At the very least, you should be able to prove you exist and were actually in contact with the accused.

I didn't go looking for the guy, but I knew from the story that she was describing Texas Tech in Lubbock! The pages have been taken down, but a google search shows he was at Tech.

He also might just be a jerk that thinks he's entitled to a certain job/prestige.
