Is the area around TRY safe?

Folks have had their cars broken into at MV8. Crimes of opportunity will happen anywhere in this city if you don't use good judgement (like leaving your purse in your car during drop off).

What does MV8 have to do with this post? MV P street is in very crime ridden area and the kids have to walk to playground. I’d also add that while MV8 is in a decent neighborhood, Turkey Thicket (where they play) is known to have more crime. Point is I wouldn’t have any more qualms sending kid to TRY than I would MVP.

The point is that crime happens everywhere, even in so-called safe areas like MV . If you use good judgment (and don't do stupid things like leaving your purse in your car), you should be fine. You were so quick to be offended that my post went over your head.

MV P Street is not remotely safe. Look at the crime stats around 1st and P. That was also the epicenter of the tainted K deaths last year. Not sure that's your baseline for safety...

Cars get broken into everywhere in the city. That’s not as much an indicator of more serious crimes such as muggings, drug and gang related drive by shootings and homicides.

I live by H St NE so know the area by TRY well. Compared to H St NE where TR 4th St is located and compared to Brookland where MV8 is located, it’s definitely higher in crime, drugs, etc...

I would not send my kid to that area but others may have a higher threshold when it comes to those things.

Crime in that area is very targeted, tends to be right along Benning Road and is very disproportionately at night. I live in NE Capitol Hill, would never live near TRY and would have no problem sending my kid there for school. I don’t think I’d let my MSer commute alone to TRY even though it should be super easy on the trolley, but otherwise no concerns.

Your post does not make sense. You state you have no concerns but at the same time state you would not let your middle school kid commute there when the overwhelming majority of middle school kids commute to school by themselves.

Right but the post right before you only mentioned MVP. The point that went over your head is not whether people should be smart but a lot of actual violent crime happens (during daylight) at MVP so if people have no qualms about attending MVP, they shouldn’t have any attending TRY.

Crimes stats or not. I feel much safer walking around the area of MVP than where TRY is located. There are no corner liquor stores, tons of people hanging out in front of them and on corners during the day, blocks after blocks of depressed and run down housing, drunk people sitting on the sidewalks or sleeping on the streets, etc.......

OP I’m sure you have driven down by TRY and your hesitation sending your kid there. Hence your post.

I know what you’re implying and you’re simply being racist/classist. The fact of the matter is there are literally daytime shootings around MVP all the time. I don’t care how many more gentrifiers you see around MV, it is what it is. And the MV kids have to walk around there during the day to get to a playground. If you know anything about true gang violence, you’d know that depressed looking surroundings is not a big indicator of gang activity. It’s more about territory.

Here are a few daytime shootings within blocks of MV. But you keep counting liquor stores and do you. North Capitol is literally one of the most violent streets on the east coast.

Oh please, enough of the race card. Go to any area in a city with obvious high poverty and depressed housing and you will find more crime. It is what it is. You few cases above doesn’t prove anything.

I mean, I literally said “but otherwise no concerns,” not that I had no concerns at all. I don’t think my 5th grader is mature enough to definitely recognize the signs of trouble and stay away. That’s a relevant fact when I say crime in the area is very targeted; 95% of what you have to be worried about around TRY is getting caught up as a bystander and I trust myself to minimize that likelihood for my child and I more than I trust my child. Additionally, for randomize street crime, an 11 year old is a soft target and there is enough crime in the general vicinity that I worry. I would not worry about sending my PK3er there when they will never be out alone at all.
Anonymous
Btw, I would be way more worried if they were walking through the neighborhood to get to a park everyday. No “normal” criminal is going to target ES kids at school on purpose, so again it’s the bystander worry.

It’s not a FEW cases. It’s literally just the first few of DAYTIME shootings around MV in the last year. Ok that you feel fine going to MV. Fact of the matter is it’s probably the most dangerous school location of most schools in DC and yes, that includes EOTR. Pull up the stats for violent crimes and tell me otherwise. Why are you so defensive about your school that you’re willing to ignore facts?

I would not worry about sending my PK3er there when they will never be out alone at all.

And what if your 5th grader had to commute to TR4th or MV8. If you are comfortable having him commute to these schools alone whereas you are not with TRY, then you argument would not hold about no problems sending your kid to TRY.

If the OP is looking for PK (as is likely), I would definitely not make decisions based on what I would do with my 5th grader commute wise. I also explained I live in the NE Hill. I could drive my kid to TRY in under 10 minutes. I could walk to TR4 in just over that. Also, TRY and TR4’s MS is shared, so... no... that’s not relevant in that case. MV8 is a weird stalking horse here as if never be comparing immersion to non-immersion as apples-to-apples; I have a clear preference between the two and would prioritize between good schools (which all of these are) on that basis.
