No worse than apple tree Columbia heights, Mundo Verde p street, or lots of other schools with long wait lists.
Folks have had their cars broken into at MV8. Crimes of opportunity will happen anywhere in this city if you don't use good judgement (like leaving your purse in your car during drop off).
What does MV8 have to do with this post? MV P street is in very crime ridden area and the kids have to walk to playground. I’d also add that while MV8 is in a decent neighborhood, Turkey Thicket (where they play) is known to have more crime. Point is I wouldn’t have any more qualms sending kid to TRY than I would MVP.
The point is that crime happens everywhere, even in so-called safe areas like MV . If you use good judgment (and don't do stupid things like leaving your purse in your car), you should be fine. You were so quick to be offended that my post went over your head.
MV P Street is not remotely safe. Look at the crime stats around 1st and P. That was also the epicenter of the tainted K deaths last year. Not sure that's your baseline for safety...
I mentioned MV8 in the post, not MV P.
Cars get broken into everywhere in the city. That’s not as much an indicator of more serious crimes such as muggings, drug and gang related drive by shootings and homicides. I live by H St NE so know the area by TRY well. Compared to H St NE where TR 4th St is located and compared to Brookland where MV8 is located, it’s definitely higher in crime, drugs, etc... I would not send my kid to that area but others may have a higher threshold when it comes to those things.
Crime in that area is very targeted, tends to be right along Benning Road and is very disproportionately at night. I live in NE Capitol Hill, would never live near TRY and would have no problem sending my kid there for school. I don’t think I’d let my MSer commute alone to TRY even though it should be super easy on the trolley, but otherwise no concerns.
Your post does not make sense. You state you have no concerns but at the same time state you would not let your middle school kid commute there when the overwhelming majority of middle school kids commute to school by themselves.
I mean, I literally said “but otherwise no concerns,” not that I had no concerns at all. I don’t think my 5th grader is mature enough to definitely recognize the signs of trouble and stay away. That’s a relevant fact when I say crime in the area is very targeted; 95% of what you have to be worried about around TRY is getting caught up as a bystander and I trust myself to minimize that likelihood for my child and I more than I trust my child. Additionally, for randomize street crime, an 11 year old is a soft target and there is enough crime in the general vicinity that I worry. I would not worry about sending my PK3er there when they will never be out alone at all.
And what if your 5th grader had to commute to TR4th or MV8. If you are comfortable having him commute to these schools alone whereas you are not with TRY, then you argument would not hold about no problems sending your kid to TRY.
