But Subaru's entire marketing ploy is to convince progressives that not only is it ok to drive an ineffecient SUV but it is actually the progressive and green thing to do!

Global warming - no problem - even though you are driving a car that gets poor mileage this car is for progressives so it is ok to drive your kids 3 blocks to school!

On my second Subaru in 20 years and have had none of these issues (and DH's family lives in the mountains and has had Subarus for as long as he can remember). Sounds like you got a lemon or didn't maintain it properly.

I admit it, I fell for their marketing bullsh!t. Twice.

Two lemons, ten years apart? With by-the-book maintenance?

No. They build shitty cars.

They work phenomenally well in snow. Period. That's all. Otherwise they're junk.

What do you recommend instead? We were considering getting a Subaru to replace DH's Honda, which frankly has had a lot of issues itself.

IMO, cars are going the way of appliances -- they don't build them like they used to anymore where they last 20+ years.
