The time has come for me to get a new car, but I’m having a real hard time saying goodbye to my old car.
It’s over a decade old. I bought it new with the signing bonus from my first “real” job in my field. It was the first shiny, new, you-know-it’ll-start vehicle I ever owned. I feel like I became an adult in this car. I drove it to my wedding! I sat in it in the parking lot of the OB’s office and devoured the sonogram pics of my first child in it. Lulled my newborn to sleep in it. So many miles and memories in it. I don’t know how to give it up! Thanks for listening. If you’ve felt similar and can commiserate, feel free! |
| Getting another Subaru? |
| Just lean into it and get an Outback or Forester! |
I feel you, OP. I sold my first new car to my parents' neighbor for their teenagers...five years later, I still smile when I drive past it in their neighborhood, remembering the adventures it took me on

I just got rid of my 15 yr old subaru that I went through all my life's major milestones in.. getting engaged, married, kids, major move, etc... I loved that car.
I got another subaru but I don't like some of the features. The autoshut off engine really bugs the heck out of me. I have to turn that feature off every time I start the engine. |

I just got rid of a car I'd had for 18 years. Got it in college, and could not believe it lasted me until I was almost 40.
I felt a pang of sadness as my DH drove it away for the last time and felt silly, it's just a car right? Do you know what cured that pang? A gorgeous new car that has all these totally amazing features that I didn't even know existed! My old car had a tape deck. Now I just keep the keys in my purse and hit a button and go. I don't need to unlock the car, it sense my keys are close! It's like a damn miracle and I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I knew I'd enjoy a new car, but damn it's amazing. |
| Oh, I was hoping you had a family of adorable Golden Retrievers that did human-like things. |
DP, and this is an inspiration to me. DH keeps threatening to take my 15 year old Honda Odyssey away in the night while I'm sleeping to force me to get a new car. It has carried scores of kids to countless sports practices and games, I absolutely love everything about it aside from the increasingly labored sounds it makes on long drives. However, the thought of satellite radio, a backup camera, and other new features is kind of appealing. |

You wanna know what a REAL Subaru commercial should be like?
Money being vacuumed out of your pockets for things like wheel bearings, CV axles, CVT transmissions, cylinder head gaskets, valve spring recalls, brake switch recalls... and on and on. That's what real Subaru ownership looks like. |
On my second Subaru in 20 years and have had none of these issues (and DH's family lives in the mountains and has had Subarus for as long as he can remember). Sounds like you got a lemon or didn't maintain it properly. |
| Think about all the memories you'll make in your new car!! |
We just bought a new Subaru, how do you shut that off? |
There are a few people on here who really hate subarus |
PP Here.. I don't know about the other models, but on the Forestor, there are a series of "buttons" on the lower left side of the steering wheel.. one of the buttons is to open the trunk (and that one bugs me too); below that button is the button for the autostart. I think it has an "A" on the button - for "autoshutoff". I googled how to permanently shut it off but it's pretty involved; you have to take something apart and unplug the electrical unit to the autoshutoff. I do like the bluetooth connection to my phone though. Super convenient for handsfree text/phone. Rear backup camera is ok, but doesn't beep when you get close to something. I find I barely use the backup camera because I'm still used to not having a backup camera. I also like the blind side detection warning. All the other warning detections annoy me. My car keeps beeping at me for some sh1t or another, and it annoys me. And before you ask why I got all these features if I don't like them, I didn't want those features. It came with the option package I wanted which included the remote start and remote trunk - my two must haves. I could not not get those other options. |
I admit it, I fell for their marketing bullsh!t. Twice. Two lemons, ten years apart? With by-the-book maintenance? No. They build shitty cars. They work phenomenally well in snow. Period. That's all. Otherwise they're junk. |
