Glazed and chocolate donuts for breakfast most mornings

This thread looks like a fantastic place for the holier-than-thou types that run rampant on DCUM to collectively cluck their tongues at how inferior the rest of the country is.

The sugar, the fat, the artificial sweetners (in the Crystal Light). Wow. I'm with you, that's a horrid breakfast and I'd have made some sort of comment myself. I feel sorry for the kids.

Does your sister also eat a doughnut and Crystal Light for breakfast? I don't know how you could do that regularly and not be obese or have heart problems.

FWIW, doughnuts were a once-in-a-while treat when I was a kid, and they still are today. I hope your sister's kids eat better meals for lunch and dinner!

I admit I will be that holier-than-thou poster, but that breakfast makes me really sad.

I know we all do the best we can and I'm sure I make bad parenting moves all the time, but food and nutrition is something that is just very important to me and I admit I can't fathom why it's not to everyone (to be fair it is part of my career so I am biased). Nutrition is just such an easy way to be healthy and feel better. And I am aware eating super nutritious is not easy for everyone - it does take some education, planning ahead, and though you don't have to spend a ton I admit it is easier to eat well if you can spend a ton (especially when it comes to organics and convenience foods like bagged spinach).

I LOVE krispy kremes - just had a few last week on my birthday! But every day for breakfast? With a sugary beverage? Not a great way to start the day. Oh well. Just my two cents.

Seriously, the chemical sweetener in the Crystal Light scares me more than the donuts. But whaddyagonnado?

When I was younger, I was a cultural relativist (anything goes, right?), but are somethings that are just wrong. Feeding your kids junk food every single morning is bad. Smoking is bad. Driving drunk is bad. You get the point, I hope.

I just got back from a trip to Tampa where my husband's cousins fed her kids only junk food. I was alone with my toddler and 4 year old and her and her 1 year and 2 year olds---and they did not eat anything but donuts, rice krispy treats (she considers cereal), christmas cookies...they seriously didn't ingest anything normal. I had to ask her for some bread to make my guys a peanut butter sandwich....

the most disturbing part was at dinner at a restaurant...she asked for coca-cola in their sippies.....the waiter said '4?' and I nearly jumped out of my seat and shouted 'no--water for my 2'....

It was so Britney. I don't necessarily think it's regional more socieconomical.

Ignore the crazies. Sugar donuts for breakfast EVERY morning is criminal. I have an enormous sweet tooth and do give my sons prob. more treats than I should a day---but they at least get the healty basics at each meal.

Awesome story - it makes me shiver. Biggest Loser is starting a new season tonight, BTW.

Krispy Kreme should start shooting a spinach or pumpkin filling into donut holes. I'd probably eat three before noticing the odd texture...

No, we said MILK.

It's still milk if it has chocolate in it, just in case you didn't realize that the chocolate syrup doesn't actually alter the molecular structure of the milk.

Ugh, how awful. I don't even think cereal qualifies as decent food, given the amount of sugar and other crap it contains (but I'm not American, either). Some EU countries have some interesting guidelines regarding that, read something about the UK studies recently...wish I could remember where so I could post a link. something about how only 1 cereal on the market meets the guidelines as proper food due to the sugar content. Interesting. And peanut butter only counts in you're using natural: read smashed peanuts, no extras....

No, it doesn't. But to that milk it adds a crudload of unnecessary sugar.

It has nothing to do with "the rest of the country". THere are plenty of people in the rest of the country who are aware of proper nutrition. And plenty of people right here in DC who feed their kids unbelievable crap. After all, Giant does sell Twinkies to somebody. Is it you?

And there is no shortage of fat kids and fat adults here, either.

Yep. And a whole lot of yummy flavor. All things in moderation. No extra sugar at home, an ocassional treat for the kids when we go out for breakfast--which is usually once every blue moon.
