Grades Lowered - Homework Not Graded

Anonymous
We are going to need MUCH more information here. You think your child's grade was "lowered after the fact?"

Isn't it more likely that the first grade was erroneous? What did the teacher say when your child asked about it?

Homework not graded? Do you mean not graded in real time, or never graded? If never graded, how did it impact your child's grade?

OP- RE: after-the-fact. It's all documented and confirmed with a FOIA request from MCPS themselves. The graded homework sent back with the child and the grade of record went from an A to a D, as one example, so not much ambiguity there... it's pretty air-tight. Not many parents check the assignment grades with what was recorded. One assignment was even repeated three times (apparently lowering the overall grade?). I don't know what kind of people can do that to a Fourth Grader, but apparently it's all (and I quote) "proper" per MCPS Superintendent.

I don't believe it.

Any of it.

I think this affected DC's admission into 6th Magnet this year.

Do you realize how many kids do not attend Magnet schools? Who do not get in for one reason or another?

Or qualified kids who get into Magnet programs and decide not to go. Mine did that graduated from Yale, MIT, Stanford. I don't think my kids missed out at all. Nor do I think my children who did not get in had a worse education. As a matter of fact my one who did not get in and went to a lower tier college has an awesome career in Computer Science/Supply Chain Logistics.

Of course Magnet schools are great for some kids, but they are not worth stressing your DC out for not gettin in.

This is middle school. Focus on keeping your child interested in learning, being a hard worker, and being a decent human being. This is more about you than your child.

Every students journey is different. It is what they make of it that is what is noteworthy.

OP, homework is optional in elementary in MCPS. It CANNOT effect the overall grade.

OP- According to the official FOIA response of record from MCPS, it did.

About [me]? Heh, look in the mirror.. what kind of person attacks a Fourth Grader's grader - a "decent human being"? Surely you jest.

Meant to say "attacks a fourth grader".. I was so offended I mistyped...

I’m just an observer here but saying you should focus on keeping your child interested in learning and becoming a decent human is really, truly not an attack.

OP if you are FOIA-ing the school system it’s much more likely that you’re just a crazy person than it is that the teacher had some vendetta against your kid that the Principal and Superintendent decided to back up.

No one is attacking a 4th grader. Original post listed child as a 5th grader going to 6th grade magnet.

Also, I stand by what I wrote. Of course this not directed at the child.

This is about mom. Her DC could care less whether they go to the magnet school unless A. they dislike their current school friends B. mom & dad putting a ton of pressure on them about getting in.

Yes, I was harsh to op. Who goes on social media and complains that homework grades stopped their kid from getting into a Magnet school???

Again, this is about mom and dad period.

Magnet schools are great, no issue there, but there is a reason not everyone gets to go. That is not necessarily a bad thing.

To the poster who says "there is a reason not everyone gets to go" - since you have no clue about my child, I don't take it personally. On the contrary - once I figured out what was happening, I told DC it was okay to drop out of CES. DC wanted to stay - with friends and the program and worked tail off last year. I know you probably have your own opinion and won't be dissuaded, however, the matter is with the BoE (and afterwards, the State of Maryland, DoJ, Courts, Bethesda Magazine, whomever cares about children are treated at MCPS, etc.). To the poster that doesn't believe this is real - I'll look for your apology once all the appeals are over with.

I’m a teacher and having a hard time figuring out what happened.

Kid turns in all HW and gets a good grade on all of it.

Grade in computer then isn’t the same grade?
One assignment is listed, separately three times?
School says it’s all accurate?
School says only reason child didn’t get into magnet was HW score?

And I will be happy to apologize if that's the case, OP. The reason I don't believe you is that some people have asked you for details and you have not given them. Why are you posting on DCUM if you do not want to explain some details that actually do matter in this discussion, and why are you on DCUM if you have gone through all these lengths with MCPS and BOE and whoever else?

If you are legit, you need to tell us whether the homework was classwork that counted but could be completed at home; what explanation the teacher gave you for changing the grade and keeping at D; what explanation the Principal gave you when you requested her or his interference; what triggered your FOIA, exactly?

My child is in a CES right now. Some classwork can be completed at home and thus counts towards the grade. MCPS Portal does not have the breakdown of each assignment but has categories, so I cannot see how many or which assignments are counted towards each category. She has gotten one B that I thought was a little harsh, but the others As and Bs were well deserved.

You are upset about admission to middle school magnet program. In your description you say it is because of homework grades that were inaccurate. That you reported this up to the superintendent. That this stopped your child from getting into a Magnet program. I find that hard to believe.

I do understand a parent wanting to have grades accurately recorded. Again, not the reason your child did not get in.

It's not like a middle school magnet acceptance is going to automatically get your kid in at the high school level. And high school is three years away. There are plenty of kids that end up at Magnet programs after being denied in MS. If your child is that gifted and motivated then that will happen.

But, if your child never makes it into a Magnet program they are not doomed. Or if they do, it does not guarantee acceptance to a college that you choose. Are you going to call Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton etc if your child does not get in and you think they should?

Clearly you are the one obsessing over this issue. Not your child, given your posts.
