Likely, although with Longfellow already having been expanded they really ought to add capacity now to McLean. |
They may do that by adding a module (2 million dollar or something?) or whatever it is called...onto a field at McLean. The problems though are it counts as square footage (which makes the need for expanding less easy to argue), it is not very secure, sound issues, exposure to elements while walking to cass (with no time to get jacket and umbrella), etc. McLean is not in line yet for renovations so we are talking about something that even with lobbying cannot happen for a number of years. |
I’m new around here. I was always under the impression that mclean high was getting an expansion soon. They aren’t even in line??! I guess with Langley’s capacity, they can just shift some students over for the time being. My kids just started attending Churchill Road in the Langley pyramid. My child’s class is in the mod building. They have a covered walkway to the main building. My child seems not to mind it. Classroom looks normal size and has bathrooms in the hall. We are new so I have no idea if this mod building is temporary or permanent. I believe 2 full grades have classrooms in this mod building. |
It is better to have a modular than gut McLean’s enrollment and programs. People don’t realize what a shitty, sub-par school McLean will be if they just move 400 students to Langley, or how quickly Langley will then get overcrowded. They are building additions outside the scheduled renovation cycle at other high schools, just not McLean. And that includes at West Potomac, where they absolutely could be moving kids to Mount Vernon first. |
I wish they would not take the girls softball field though. At least, they have won a state championship and do well. Take it from another team. |
They should use whatever land is the most convenient to the main school. If it happens to be the softball field, so be it. |
Does she have any complaints about sound? I heard sound proofing is poor. |
LOL, no... melodramatic much? Besides which, McLean's enrollment is projected to grow in the years ahead, it'll get back to something close to where it is now, but at least that buys time for a proper expansion vs. the current situation.
Langley's enrollment is projected to decline in the years ahead, so however crowded it would be if they move some kids would be "peak" crowding at Langley (once grandfathering completes) and then get less crowded over time in the years ahead. |

Yorktown = brand-new
W-L = brand-new George Mason = will be brand-new Langley = renovated and expanded Marshall = renovated and expanded Madison = big addition planned McLean = overcrowded, unrenovated, and not getting a cent from FCPS. Obviously unless FCPS starts paying attention that area will go downhill fast. Sorry for people who bought there thinking FCPS actually pays attention or cares. |
NP here - have you asked for more info on how they do their projections? It’s pretty crazy and they tend to be wildly inaccurate. There are several planned communities going up with builders advertising they are in the Langley school boundary. Those are not included in the projections. |
Just their one-year projections for Langley were significantly off (2019 enrollment was higher than forecast). Factor in the new developments and older neighborhoods turning over and Langley likely would see an increase in kids regardless of any students moved from McLean. But they’ll mess with the projections to get the numbers they want. |
Rather than expand West Potomac by over 700 seats why not add 350 to both West Potomac and McLean and move some West Potomac kids to Mount Vernon? The only reason they’d ever build WestPo out to 3000 is bias against Mount Vernon. |
The additions off renovation cycle are so sketch. One thing the prior and current school board never does is call out the porky pig projects of Madame Chair Corbett Sanders. In this meeting they do mention additions off cycle and the fact that those additions impact available funds for the renovation line-up. No one has the courage to say those unneeded additions impact overcrowded areas. Schultz was more palateable than Corbett Sanders. A farce. Again the new Springfield person beinhs up Clifton and Tholen plus others [Sully] dare to use the C words Chantilly and Centreville. |

Sounded like quite a few parents called out FCPS last night at the CIP and Budget hearings on the inequality of shrinking McLean to under 2000 kids while building West Potomac out to 3000 kids when there is available space at Mount Vernon.
Will be interesting to see whether they find some money to build an addition at McLean or proceed with Corbett-Sanders’ Taj Mahal plans for West Potomac and end up in protracted litigation. Would be very interesting to learn in discovery why they won’t use the capacity at Mount Vernon. |
Thanks for the update. Even if they agree to expand McLean, it will be many years before it happens. I will definitely join the push to get it into the queue even though my kids won't benefit. |
