Do you think hot yoga really burns 300 calories in an hour?

I also don’t think 300 calories in an hour is very much.

Agree. 300 is not too crazy. But I agree if it is a flow type class where you are moving a lot, it’s definitely possible. In a more passive class, no, unless you’re very heavy.

I definitely think you can burn 300 calories in one hour of yoga depending on the type how good you are at it and how long you can hold poses and... if you phone it in vs do it right.

Especially given that you would burn around 80-100 cal an hour if you did absolutely nothing (BMR). So you are really only burning an additional 200 for an hour of yoga.

300 calories an hour is not a lot, especially because that usually includes the amount of calories your body burns when you are going nothing. So if your body burns 100 calories an hour, the yoga is only adding an extra 200 calories. Isn’t that equivalent to walking for an hour?

I've never taken hot yoga, but I do take a class that involves a lot of movement, with weights and bands, and it also has a HIIT component.

According to my apple watch, that one hour class brings me in right around 250cals.

If it matters, and I think it does, I'm female. 5'9" 123lbs. Based on this I'm going to burn fewer calories from the get-go as compared to a heavier person, or a male.

No. Just no.

Maybe I’m doing the wrong yoga classes, but I don’t find them challenging what so ever, other than a good stretch. I think walking would burn more calories than yoga, hot or not.

You right you are not taking a calorie burning yoga class.

I practice hot yoga and usually log it in my fitness pal afterwards. For an hour it usually says ~250 based on heart rate and my weight (~140). My class is pretty active, the room is between 95 and 100. There are slower classes, and I would assume the heat helps but is probably not the same.

When I was taking Bikram, I loved it for the whole-body feeling of pure fatigue and relaxation afterwards. I would sleep like an actual baby and my skin looked amazing. Calories? I dunno. I felt amazing afterward though.

Try Down Dog yoga. The first few times I took it, I was so tired afterward, I had to take a nap. I also think that Bikram is really good though I don’t go anymore because of the scandals. Some hot yoga with weights classes at Core Power also seem really challenging.

Yes. My average is 300 and I believe it. I have lost about 10 lbs since starting to do bikram about 4 days a week 5 months ago. I was not that heavy to begin with and now just look very fit.

Most studios have rebranded and Bikram C gets no money for it, so I think you don’t need to avoid going unless the fact that he put that yoga series together is something you can’t support.

Nope. No way. You get hot running and it only burns about 100 calories a mile. So unless you are 300+ lbs - no way.

Yeah but running is easily 600calories/hour if you run at an easy pace of 10 minute mile.

It makes sense that hot yoga would be 300 calories/hour - so half as much as jogging.
