I really liked it. The acting is truly as good as it gets. And the make up and special effects (making the actors look young) were amazing.

It may feel familiar but it’s basically a true story. Interesting note about Joe Pesci: A friend of mine was on a Secret Service details at a fancy hotel in NY. He went up to Pesci and complimented him on his acting career and asked for an autograph. He said Pesci reacted by swearing at him and told him he only signs autographs at charity events and to leave him alone. The bellhop at the hotel witnessed the exchange and told my friend that Pesci is one of the most nasty miserable people he’s ever seen come through the hotel... |
Just because it’s mostly a true story doesn’t mean it’s all that unique or interesting. Plenty of mob movies are based on true stories. I do like the complicated characters. DeNiro’s character was unlikeable in many ways but you end up feeling a bit sorry for him. And I can see Pesci being a miserable jerk IRL. |
Not only IRL. Every character he has ever played is a jerk. I think that he is probably just playing himself. |
I did not think it was long at all, but the title is a long way off from the story. My exFIL is a dead ringer for the young Pesci. |
How old is Robert DeNiro's character in this movie? The movie stars in the 1950's and he's a WW2 veteran with small children.
DeNiro is 76 and he looks like he's at least in his 60's in the role. Are we supposed to believe that he is younger? |
I'm from the NE of Pennsylvania and I really liked the local elements of the story (Pittston and Scranton). We watched it in installments, we didn't realize it was going to be so long. Did anyone find it weird how Pacino's character was so obsessed with "Little Peggy"? |
DH and I made it 30 minutes into it and turned it off. Watching DeNiro shuffling about trying to play the younger version of his character was too much. All the character are a rehash of every previous Martin Scorsese film ever made. Boring. Tired. Played out. Not a single original anything. Garbage. |
I loved seeing my hometown where some of it was filmed! |
I really thought it was going to be revealed that she was sexually abused by Pacino/Pesci/Her father |
yes! DH and I kept looking at each other saying "please don't let it be THAT". her character fell flat because they focused on her too much. |
+100 Also hard for a character with 7 words to really do much. |
Wouldn't say it's garbage, but given that it's 3.5 hours long and it's basically every other Scorsese film, there's other more worthy things to watch. |
Walked out of the room during the baptism scene. What a terrible knock off on The Godfather. It was almost a parody. Lame! |
Agree. DeNiro as an Irishman is preposterous. |
