1. Gift bag: How much does this cost you? $50-100? I bet they would prefer the cash. Take away the nice bag and you are gifting tissues, lotion, hand sanitizer, and candy. Blah. What if they prefer certain brands or scents?
2. Visa gift card: These are spectacularly annoying to use - you never know the balance and when you might end up short. They are useful if you are making a big purchase and remember to have it with you and the place allows you to pay with multiple cards. They are also useful bc they can be uploaded to your Amazon gift card balance.
3. Starbucks card: No, not everyone drinks Starbucks
4. Walmart/Target/Amazon: Better - chances are someone can get useful stuff from there and order online if they don't go there.
5. Cash - cash is king!

I’m a teacher. I would love Starbucks or target! I also think totes with stuff in it are lovely, and I even like the mugs I get. If I don’t drink out of them, I use them to hold pens or pencils at home or in my classroom. I got perfume once that I never used, but most of the time I can find use for the gifts. My favorite (and I mean it) are the handmade cards from

At our daycare, one of the teacher has recently moved to different classroom, and here comes another new teacher. Should we give x-mas gift to the teacher that has moved to different classroom? And, I have been wondering how to do the giftcard amount for the teacher (take care of DC from Sept - mid Nov) that has moved to different classroom & the new teacher (from mid-Nov to Dec) that has newly joined the classroom? I mean should I give them half of the amount compared to the one stay the whole time (from Sept to Dec) ?

The new teacher that newly joins would take care of DC till next year June. And, I would give both teachers teacher appreciation gifts next year.

We always pool money for the whole classroom (or school at a small daycare) and divy it up evenly among the teachers. I am usually the organizer- some people give extremely generously and others give $5. This is the best way- teachers get cash that they can use however they wish and no parents are in the awkward position of giving cash directly to the teachers. As someone who gives generously, I don’t worry that it feels like I’m buying the teachers affection.

OP, I gave all the teachers a $50 Target gift card last year and they were VERY appreciative. They can buy wine, comfy pjs, toys for their own kids, smelly candles and lotion, bananas, tampons, WHATEVER.

PP here. I am actually a nanny so I earn more than a preschool teacher but still have a lower HHI than most parents. Have never, nor will ever, step into a Walmart and Amazon is just horrible to their employees so I stopped buying anything there.
