Wait what? Target, Walmart and Amazon all have GROCERIES. You don't need food ever?

OP, I gave all the teachers a $50 Target gift card last year and they were VERY appreciative. They can buy wine, comfy pjs, toys for their own kids, smelly candles and lotion, bananas, tampons, WHATEVER.

NP here and I have never shopped at any of those stores either. There are better places to get groceries and personal items.

I agree that cash is still king. Why complicate things? “Green is everyone’s color”.

What? Where do you buy your toilet paper? This isn't a HHI thing, I'm rich and shop at Walmart, target and Amazon all the time. Is there some secret hyper local artisanal toilet paper store I don't know about?

NP here. I don’t support those stores/corporations either. It does have nothing to do with HHI. It has to do with principles.

Do you shop at Whole Foods?

No. Why are you so obsessed with where I shop? I have never stepped foot in Walmart or Target and stopped using Amazon. I’m not alone in the, PP. I am not “crunchy”, artisanal nor rich.

Because I think you're lying.

Cash is better. If the teacher is low income they may not be used to a bank and use a check cashing place. And, even if they are banked, it still is an extra step. Of course assuming they have a safe place to keep the card with cash for the day.

This is an odd comment.

+1 This is an incredibly odd comment. Teachers don't make a ton but any teacher working for a legitimate school has a bank account for direct deposit. And I'm sure most of them have online/mobile banking and a place to put a check.

What's you HHI? I guarantee if you made $30k a year you would not be throwing away gift cards to any of those places.

NO ONE would throw away gift cards from Target Walmart and Amazon. Those are not specialty stores. You don't even have to visit a physical Walmart store if they are too far away from hour home or you're too high and mighty to mix with the crowd that shops there. With a few clicks, they deliver to your door. I find the poster who says that they let the GC expire very odd.

NP and also, Walmart and Amazon still win if the gift cards expire. The money has already been spent.

NP here. I’ve never been inside a Walmart or Target either. Not lying, I promise you.

Amazon, Walmart and Target gift cards all NEVER expire.

OK.. but if we do go cash/gift card route, is it appropriate to give the same amount to all teachers (my daughter has a lead teacher, and 3 support staff)??

But you've been inside a Safeway presumably. A Giant. A Whole Foods.

Ha! Not the other PP but seriously curious...where do you shop for groceries/ toiletries/ household products that is reasonably priced? I would love to buy my weekly groceries from Mom's Organic Market or Yes! but the budget doesn't allow for it.

NP here. In regards to labor practices, my understanding is that Safeway and Giant are both better places to shop than Amazon, Walmart, or Target. Safeway and Giant are both unionized, so likely treat their workers much better than those other stores. It’s common for folks to support businesses with better practices for their workers so I see how some folks would not shop at Amazon, Target, or Walmart. No judgement towards those that do otherwise, but putting out there that that is a common rational I have heard.

I give everyone $20. I don’t need anyone comparing notes and feeling slighted. That’s what I can afford and I think it’s a nice gesture if accompanied by a note.

And that said I think if you could afford to give more, do!

Terrible gift.

Signed, a teacher

The first year I did it, it was suggested by my co-room mom who is also a kindergarten teacher. I see the teachers from the past 2-3 years still using their bags when I drop off my younger son. So I don’t really care what you think. It’s better than yet another mug, ornament or scented candle.
