What affects your kids more - fall back or spring forward?

Spring forward:
Kids are waking up at 6am instead of 7am. We are all getting up an hour earlier. Puke.

Now I'm confused. This morning my DS woke at 5am (because he normally wakes at 6am). It sucked. However, in the spring forward time change, he'd wake at 7am (because he normally wakes at 6am). How is that bad?

Before I had kids I hated spring forward and loved fall back. Now I hate fall back and love spring forward.

It may have something to do with the fact that my kids don't sleep in, even if they go to bed later.

You are correct. PP is confused. In the fall, they go to bed fine but wake up early. Because it feels like 7am to them but the new time is 6am (fall back.) In the spring, they don't feel like going to bed at 8pm because it only feels like 7pm to them (spring forward.)

Fall back is worse. They are now up an hour earlier.

It’s only one hour either way. No big deal. Blackout shades for the win!

It seems like people’s opinion of this depends on how late their kids sleep in and how well they fare with sleep loss. My kids are up at 6:45 am for elementary school and every day is a huge challenge, so fall back is great for us. Their bodies will have a much easier time getting up early this Monday. Spring forward is always a challenge because it takes several days to adjust and be able to fall asleep earlier, so everyone is just exhausted from sleep deficit by the end of the week.

Same here, down to the age of the kids. It was never a huge issue, tho. I guess some kids’ internal clocks are more flexible about this than others.

spring more so, but not much. Some people talk about spring forward like they’ve traveled from DC to Hong Kong

I guess your kids are not night owls. Mine are, and it’s usually super hard to get them up in the morning. The 3-4 days after DLS ends is pretty much the only time during school year when they wake up on their own, without me having to literally drag them out of bed. For the opposite reason, when DLS starts in the spring, is the hardest.

Same. My child will never sleep in, so Fall Back means pre 5am wake ups for a couple of weeks. Spring forward we technically lose an hour, but at least he stays in bed until 7am, which feels like I'm gaining sleep (because it's a time I will actually sleep, vs fall back).

My DD is in middle school and school starts at 7:30 a.m. It’s awful when she’s getting up for school in the pitch dark and kids are waiting at the bus stop in the dark. Some kids are picked up as early as 6:30.

I much prefer the standard time that we’re on now. Yes, it gets dark earlier but it’s normal for the time of year. It’s Daylight Saving Time that’s abnormal.

LOL. Not confused at all. It was much easier to get my kids up this morning and ready for school after the time change (felt like 8, not 7). In the spring it will be a nightmare. I’ll have to wake them up at 7 but it will feel like 6 (shudder). That’s too early for anyone to be awake.
