+1 I'm not a Jew and I think that's weird. |
That's not how I was told it was pronounced YI. EL |

One of my kids has an Old Testament name, like Daniel or Jonathan. I think that's fine. I think a less common Old Testament name would be fine too. But to me a Modern Hebrew, or Yiddish name when you don't have the cultural background to support it would be odd. Just like it would be odd for me to name my non-Slavic child Zosya, or Zdenek, even though I love both of those. |
I would assume the child was Jewish.
I also pronounce it ya-el. Jewish mom (who wanted to name our kids names from another culture, think Aiden and Bridgette, and DH said, "no, we don't appropriate from other cultures not our own!") |
Do whatever you want. You are naming your child from a position of love and your intent is pure.
I don’t believe in cultural appropriation when your intent is good. |
Agree. You don’t pronounce it yale. |
Yael Braun. Founder of F*ck Cancer and Motherlucker, married to music mogul Scooter Braun, pronounces Yael as Yale. Always has. Do I guess some do pronounce it take. |
I’m not Jewish. Aviva was on our shortlist for our daughter.
OP, it’s fine. |
Is this like Colin Powell where everyone but, him pronounces it correctly ie Col lin versus the part of your body? Col on? |
I've know a few Shoshanna's. I'm Christian.
My dd has a Hebrew name-it's from the Old Testament, think Rachel or Hannah (similar). |
I only like Yael pronounced Yale, too. And to OP’s question, it’s probably better to use a modern pronunciation (Yale) if not biblically inclined. |
I’m not Jewish but love the name Ari. Im unsure whether it would be cultural appropriation to use it. |
I'm Jewish and I have never heard Yael pronounced as Yale I would assume a non-Jew with a Biblical name is Evangelical - and would probably therefore infer all sorts of political and cultural things about them If that's the message you are trying to convey, or if that's who you are, go for it! |
You would assume that about any non-Jew with a Biblical name, or just an uncommon one. You really make political inferences about kids with names like Daniel and Joshua? |
