What are your thoughts on Blair NON-Magnet?

Yes, your use of the word ghetto is indeed offensive in the context of describing the most diverse high school in the state, and possibly the entire country.

My kids’ experiences at Montgomery Blair HS have been excellent. What is your personal experience with the place?

Why do the good kids have to avoid the first floor? What happens in the lunch room?

PP didn't say anything about "good kids" and bad kids. But Blair is extremely overcrowded, which means the lunch area is also extremely crowded.

If you have brought your lunch from home, it doesn't make sense to head into a sea of humanity.

Nothing. It’s just a bit crowded. My dd and her friends eat lunch on Main Street. I agree with previous posters that while large, the school is very well run. I was particularly impressed with how staff managed back to school night. Lots of school spirit!

Umm no. The PP specifically said that kids learn what areas to avoid and that kids avoid the first floor and lunch room. I have heard other parents with high school kids at Blair mention things like this. It always sounds weird to me that there are areas to "avoid" like a dark alley at night on a walk home or something.

The different gangs claim different areas of the school.

Blair parent here. Ridiculous. My youngest will happily attend next year as well. Look at the college list in Bethesda magazine. Blair is a large school but a good school just ensure that your child gets involved in clubs, sport, theater, etc. also get to know your child’s counselor. Proud to be a Blair parent

At my all-white/Asian UMC high school (not in MD), us nerds avoided the "jock" hallways because you'd get teased, harassed, or worse. High school has always been like this. I guarantee there are areas of just about any school that kids avoid if they're not part of a certain group. Sometimes it's as simple as just not wanting to hang out somewhere you don't feel like you fit in, sometimes you're definitely made to feel unwelcome.

But there's nothing any of the PPs said (or anything I've ever heard) that suggests it's actually *dangerous* to sit in the lunch room at Blair, as you imply here..

My DD prefers to eat in a classroom because it is quieter and not crowded..not because the lunch room is scary or dangerous. She has gotten to know certain teachers very well this way too.

And, I responded to that PP that my DC *prefers* the lunch room. I think the other PP was simply referring to a preference for quiet, and reassuring that that does exist. There is nothing dangerous in the lunch room. Similarly, as a parent on back to school night I quickly learned that getting between points on two different floors, it's always better to walk hallways on the higher floor. The first floor is crowded, can't be helped.

my daughter is in the magnet, but many of her classes (history, english, foreign language, art, etc) are not magnet classes. So far (couple years in) everything seems good. Just one sub-par teacher.

And you base this on what, exactly?

Yes.
Please give examples. My brother and I graduated from Blair in 1994. Excellent school.

This is a stupid post OP. Parents/families of non-magnet Blair kids will always say "it's GREAT!!). Others who go by reputation of the school will always say "it SUCKS!"
