Women with long hair are usually the last to realize that their hair looks frumpy or unkempt. If she thinks it does, little doubt she’s right.

I often read that on DCUM, about adult women and little girls, and I just have to conclude it's jealousy. All I see when I'm out and about around the DC area is beautiful long hair. I never see frumpy long hair.

You’re kidding! It is nearly always straggly and gross!

I'm not kidding. I've often wondered why people write this on DCUM, so I've been paying attention. All I see in the long-hair department are straight-cut (no layers), shiny haired people. My young daughter is one of them, actually, but we have friends and neighbors who also have beautiful long hair. It's definitely a trend in the teen set.
We live in Bethesda, but I drive everywhere in the DC area.

.

And they touch it and stroke it with their fingers all the time. Yuck!

I live on an island and women of all ages (myself included) have waist length hair. I do big, loose curls.

Where?

Long hair just don't go with an old face.. not a good look for women or men.

Sure there are a lot of people with beautiful long hair but most of them are young. As you get older the texture changes and your face changes and it just drags it down and doesn’t look as good. You don’t have to get the “let me speak to a manager” but something closer to a medium/longer bob that is around shoulder length, give or take, is so much better on a woman who’s a little older.

Ugh, that always looks terrible on anyone over the age of 6.

Agree. Maybe teens and undergrads can pull it off, but that is it. Check out the demi moore thread. Long hair on an older face is not a good look. At least, not in the continental US

Butt-length hair never looks good. Ever.

Where do you live??

Nope. It looks terrible on kids too. Usually kids just look neglected when their hair is that long.

I think the definition of “long” really matters here. Some people view shoulder length hair as long hair, others only consider butt-length hair long hair. I can see how PP would see lots of bra-length hair that is well cared for and think it’s beautiful while the other PP is imagining stringy butt-length haur that’s very interactive.

Redefine "long." Collarbone-length is perfect. Maybe an inch past that. Get some layers in there.

I don't think long = automatically frumpy/unkempt, but that scraggly look is definitely out there. Especially on a thin woman of a certain age who has wrinkles and very long, stringy, one-length hair with no layers or style? Total witch hair. Sorry.

This is not true for all older women with long hair, but yes...it's out there.

I think if it’s well-cared for, it can look nice on little girls, though sometimes I think mothers are acting out their long hair fantasies through their daughters. But it’s a very juvenile look, completely inappropriate for a woman in her 30s and up.
