Looking to observe a newborn for a class

I can't imagine having a stranger come into my home twice a month just to "observe" me and baby during this important time. What a pain.

While I can’t imagine anyone taking you up on this offer I remember my friend having to do something similar in college with a slightly older infant but luckily they had family friends. I think this will be pretty hard to get anyone to allow this.

PP, do you? This is not research, and does not need IRB approval. It's on the professor to ensure ethical behavior.

"Student class assignments, as a general rule, are not systematic data collection efforts intended to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge and, thus, do not meet the federal regulatory definition of research (link is external) (45 CFR 46.102 (l)). Therefore, as a rule, student class assignments do not fall under the jurisdiction of the IRB and do not require IRB application, approval, or oversight."

-not OP, but annoyed by people's rush to needlessly suppress learning in the name of ethics.

OP-- I have an almost 1 year old, so he's too old for your assignment, but I would have welcomed you to observe.

OP doesn't give any indication what she will be doing with her observations, so it's a perfectly valid question. IRB approval is needed if:

Contribute to Generalizable Knowledge means that the purpose or intent of the project is to test or to develop scientific theories or hypotheses, or to draw conclusions that are intended to be applicable and/or shared beyond the populations or situations being studied. This may include one or more of the following:

Presentation of the data at meetings, conferences, seminars, poster presentations, etc.
The knowledge contributes to an already established body of knowledge
Other investigators, scholars, and practitioners may benefit from this knowledge
Publications including journals, papers, dissertations, and master’s theses

Where in her OP does she say she won't be doing any of that?

Same here.

You should probably work through a pediatrician to get this done. Build at least a bit of trust and validity for your request. Otherwise, it's just weird. And you have zero ability to control the environment by going to any random location to view behavior.

Sounds like you neglected your own basic education. Perhaps bing “Allen Schore” if you're interested in learning about infant mental health - how to promote healthy development - and how it’s so often damaged.

20:37 here. I should probably mention, I am not OP, nor do I know of her.

But I did participate in a few studies when my child was a baby. One such research study was conducted by Stanley Greenspan. I found it tremendously interesting.

Not OP but everyone has taken this wayyy out of proportion. First of all, Erikson is very well known and considered reputable in the child development world. Second of all, this isn't for research it's for the student to gain understanding of infant behaviors and the dynamics between a parent/child relationship so they can build skills in supporting healthy parent/child relationships. I agree this is a huge ask for a parent of a newborn but dang people, calm down! You don't have to do it if you don't want to. She's just looking for ideas. Sorry OP, my baby is too old otherwise I might consider helping out!

I would think this was weird. Not necessarily the process of observation itself, but asking here is weird. Do you have any network or resource who could help you find a family? If you feel comfortable, I would ask at church or Moms groups. Or put up flyers at the hospital, maybe offer a small gift card or something as incentive. Or reach out to your program advisor and ask for help.

I would only do this if you paid me. I'm participating in a Georgetown study for $25. I would expect at least that per hour.

$25 per hour???

I have advanced degrees and I did not make anywhere near that teaching our area’s best and brightest.
