OP, do you know what an IRB is?
PP, do you? This is not research, and does not need IRB approval. It's on the professor to ensure ethical behavior. "Student class assignments, as a general rule, are not systematic data collection efforts intended to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge and, thus, do not meet the federal regulatory definition of research (link is external) (45 CFR 46.102 (l)). Therefore, as a rule, student class assignments do not fall under the jurisdiction of the IRB and do not require IRB application, approval, or oversight." -not OP, but annoyed by people's rush to needlessly suppress learning in the name of ethics. OP-- I have an almost 1 year old, so he's too old for your assignment, but I would have welcomed you to observe.
OP doesn't give any indication what she will be doing with her observations, so it's a perfectly valid question. IRB approval is needed if: Contribute to Generalizable Knowledge means that the purpose or intent of the project is to test or to develop scientific theories or hypotheses, or to draw conclusions that are intended to be applicable and/or shared beyond the populations or situations being studied. This may include one or more of the following: Presentation of the data at meetings, conferences, seminars, poster presentations, etc. The knowledge contributes to an already established body of knowledge Other investigators, scholars, and practitioners may benefit from this knowledge Publications including journals, papers, dissertations, and master’s theses Where in her OP does she say she won't be doing any of that?
