Need ideas for what to do with kids today

We went to the library, got a bunch of books. Reading and napping now. Going to target later.

There are free, public spray pads at places like Fairfax Corner and old town Fairfax City Center. Far for you I'm sure but surely there are more places like that.

This. The constant need to have a planned (fun!) activity doesn’t set kids up well at all. Raising kids who constantly need to be entertained because they were conditioned that way is detrimental to them. It creates an issue in school as well because kids expect every single lesson to entertain them. Kids don’t know how to keep themselves occupied because there’s always something planned for them. It’s ok to stay home and do “nothing”. Especially on the hottest day of the year. Who wants to be outside doing anything today, anyway?

+1.

+1. My child has asthma. We are staying home. No need to expose her to this humidity and heat---or we will end up in the ER as our activity.

Bounce house, pillow fight, and maybe nature center. That should break up the day, gets us out of the house, and burn off energy.

Pillow Fight is not a thing that you can do to break up the day... I mean how long does this pillow fight last? 5 minutes?

We stayed in all day. One kid helped bake (I know, crazy to turn the oven on, but it was fun and still in the AC!), the other napped, they both played, tore the house apart, and them helped put it back together again. It was too hot to go to the pool, in my book! Do we really have another 2 months of summer heat?????

Lol I love threads like this because people will be like “have a dance party.” Ok cool that killed 10 minutes. Amazingly fun day.

Our pillow fight was intenste - 3 kids + 2 adults. We started with smallish pillows. By round 3 we switched to the bed pillows. We ran around the basement chasing each other with pillows, monkey in the middle with the pillows, ninja-"battle", Marco-Polo rendition, and I used my silly voice and made up some really funny storylines along the way. Killed a bit more than an hour (water breaks in between).

Can't speak for how other families do it.

Congrats to all who got through the weekend! Just wanted to speak highly of (1) the lawn exhibit at the national building museum, and (2) the indoor pool at wilson. I went into the weekend dreading the heat and we ended up having a really great - and cool - time with these activities! So, when we inevitably have another weekend like this one, keep these ideas in mind!
