Could you elaborate on why it may be a 'downside' to have a diverse MS that reflects the city's demographics, as opposed to an all-African American MS, as Hardy was as of 7~ years ago? Am curious why you think this could be a negative. |
The school may stop being reflective of the city as a whole and just reflect the neighborhood demographics. I'm sure lots of people have strong opinions on this. (Though this almost certainly will increase IB home prices, especially in Foxhall village and Glover Park) |
It's not a charter school. It's a neighborhood school. Plenty of neighborhood schools reflect their neighborhood. Nothing to be upset about. The home prices went up long ago. |
Wouldn’t a percentage of AA closer to the actual current percentage in the city be more reflective of the city? |
The school is de-tracking and placing kids with vastly different academic abilities together in high school. This is not elementary school like 1st or 2nd grade. This is high school which is supposed to be the preparation for college where the stakes are much higher. How do you believe the curriculum is going to be different in 5 years or improve? There is no chance that it’s going to go back to being tracked again. The school is already overcrowded and above is just the stimulus for middle class families to move on. Families are looking at other options or moving. No doubt about it. It’s already happening and watch the trend continue to increase in the next 5 years...... |
3-5 years is not a long time. Nothing is likely going to change at Wilson in that time period especially since the honors for all implementation is recent. I would stay at MV and track to DCI. I predict that Wilson’s change is going to drive more families wanting to get into DCI which is very unlikely unless you are in a feeder. There is already currently a long waitlist. |
Why does a neighborhood school need to be reflective of the city? Does it reflect its boundary? No, it doesn't. You should worry about UDC which doesn't reflect the city and is not a neighborhood school. |
If people don't want Wilson because of a watered down curriculum (which I disagree that they have or are moving toward) they certainly shouldn't head to DCI. The alternative for parents seeking challenge is Banneker, SWW and probably BASIS. |
This x1000 |
It makes me laugh how people who do not have a child at DCI comment on it as if they have first hand experience.... Reality is UMC EOTP families, of whom many are in feeders to DCI, won’t be moving WOTP any longer with honors for all. And some WOTP families in feeders to DCI are choosing DCI. You can put down DCI all you want but it won’t change the current trend. Honors for all is the worst thing that could happen to WOTP. |
Go to DCI for the first year. If you don’t like it, you can always move to Hardy the next year. You can’t do the reverse though so once you go to Hardy, no way for you to get back into DCI. |
Well at least it might help with the overcrowding issue at Wilson as more middle class families elect not to go that route. LOL |
Time to deep-six the uniforms, though. The uniforms seems like a relic of when Hardy was more of an inner-city school. |
Of course you show up. |
Stop repeating it. I don't think of inner-city schools when I see the uniforms, I think of private schools. Can't help it. Only the private school kids wear uniforms back at home. |
