Toyota makes slightly cheaper substitutes for Honda. Or we can say Honda makes slightly more expensive substitutes to Toyota. People who are a bit more picky about their cars will tend to like a Honda better. Those who prefer their cars to be like an appliance is going to love Toyota.

I encourage the OP to go sit in a Highlander and then a Pilot, the difference in design, fit and finish, and materials selection is quite noticeable for those who care about it. Use the infotainment system, look at the central display cluster, the Highlander is still using a design from the mid-2000s. It still has that little additional cowl just for a digital clock. Really? Seriously?

To be fair, the 2020 Highlander is the update that people are waiting for, and preview pictures show that it has received a lot of updates. My recommendation is to get a 2019 Pilot or wait for the 2020 Highlander before comparing it again.

Also, don't buy a 2-3-year-old used Pilot, you'll save almost no money compared to what type of deal you can get on a new one.

The key word. Trust, reliability, reputation.

I love my Highlander. It's the third Toyota I've owned; one is 19 years old and still going strong!

Not sure if you would consider the Chevy Traverse. I was between the Pilot and the Traverse, and we ended up with the Traverse. I love it! I have a 2018, and it has a lot of tech. I specifically wanted a model that has 7 seats rather than 8. It makes accessing the last row easier and cabin roomier. Plus there is a hatch in the trunk for some better storage. I know the Highlander does not have that space.

The difference in design?! And materials inside? How young are you? Digital clock?! Engine, transmission, horse power, etc... who gives a fig when you only care about a cute clock! I don't care which car you buy, but you need some life lesson.

We are a Toyota family for the past 15 years but bought a Pilot. The difference in the usefulness of the 3rd row is significant - the Highlander is just too small. I routinely pile 5 teenage boys into the Pilot. We have a Rav4 for our other car and love it, but for our situation at least, there's no point in having a bigger car if it doesn't seat more people!

Highlander is an old model - New is out in November. If you buy the 2019 it will be instantly dated.

Op again: for those who like Honda Pilot, is there e ouch room in the trunk for luggage when the 3rd row is being used?
