There are plenty of ways to do the same thing without a gun. Or, you just get it illegally. This is a people issue. |
Have you heard about analysis that involves controlling for other factors? Factors other than the handgun ban are influencing the homicide race (changes in demographics, level of income etc.). |
Yet guns are far more lethal than say, a knife. A crazy guy went after a pack of kids in Japan a few weeks back and killed 1 kid. If you added a gun to that equation (guns are rare in Japan), a classroom full of kids would have been dead. It takes much longer/more physical power to knife someone to death. |
And you say this from personal experience in committing homicide? |
A total distraction of an argument. “Some kids are fast learners and some are slow. So who cares if some get lead poisoned?! Factors other than lead poisoning are influencing the mental disability rate- demographics, level of income, etc”. Point is: guns kill people. If there were fewer guns this mom would be more likely to be alive today. Other factors contribute too. That doesn’t change the fact that Republican Supreme Court justices made this horrible crime more likely. |
This is a rightwing talking point that is so false I feel sorry for anyone who believes it. If flamethrowers were legal mentally ill people would kill people with flamethrowers. If grenades were legal mentally ill people would kill people with grenades. If nerve gas were legal mentally ill people would kill people will nerve gas. The solution is, as we recognize for most weapons, to ban flamethrowers, grenades, and nerve gas. Not flood the nation with them while conservative-media rubes whine about mental illness. (Mental illness treatment is a major problem. We should still do gun control.) Handguns need to be banned in this country too. Just like we ban nerve gas and other weapons designed to kill people easily. Just like every other civilized country - from Canada to the UK to Australia - does. (Yes I know you can get a handgun license in Canada. But you have to transport it unloaded in a lockbox with a special permit. For all intents and purposes handguns are banned in Canada except at firing ranges.) |

I don’t know if I’d go that far. But politics has consequences. Politics isn’t some abstract bullsh*t game. Politics is people’s lives. |
You just proved that you can't be reasoned with. -NP |

| This man was mentally ill. Everyone in his life either failed to recognize it or the help he was getting wasn't effective. There is far more to this story. Guns are just a very small part of it. If he didn't get a gun legally, he could have got one other means as he had the money/means to do it or do it another way. Instead of focusing on that, focus on the real issues and the most important part - those poor kids losing both their parents. |
Actually, both flamethrowers and grenades are lawful to own, subject to certain regulations. And you may not be aware that certain firearms (short barreled rifles, for example) are historically less heavily regulated in Canada than the US. By your logic, there should be no handgun crime at all in Canada. That obviously is not the case. And banning firearms, or even handguns, which would take the effective means of self defense away from the weak and vulnerable, is s fantasy. The ban on liquor did not work. The ban on marijuana did not work. Bans on hallucinogens, narcotics, stimulants and depressants do not work. Bans on various forms of pornography do not work. Bans on prostitution, human trafficking, murder, rape, theft, arson and other criminality do not work to eradicate the same. Penal legislation and regulations can sometimes limit the volume of some crime. But crime is a human behavior, not the function of inanimate objects. |
+1 And that you lack basic reading comprehension skills. |
How? Do you or the PP know anything about stab wounds, slash wounds, or death from exsanguination? The bald assertion that all firearms are always more deadly than all blades weapons under all circumstances is unsupportable. Murders by blade have existed before recorded time. |
Again, you're showing that you lack basic reading comprehension skills. No one is arguing that murders by blade can cause death (see the PP's Japan example), or that use of a firearm is always more deadly than a blade. But if you don't get how a firearm can mow down a boatload of kindergarteners quicker than a knife, you should educate yourself on basic weaponry and start reading the news. |
