Nanny Salary

I also cook breakfast, snacks and lunch for them. My health insurance is through my husband but employers offered it. I get 2 weeks paid vacation

So you are a nanny, cook, and dishwasher? Good use of an advanced degree.

Stop embarrassing yourself, PP.

Honestly, it's true.

I have a PhD and still clean my own toilet and wash my own car. At work, I take turns making coffee and cleaning up the lab kitchen. DH is a dentist and often does the cleanings himself.

The PP makes lunch and teaches Mandarin. Is there a more important job than teaching children and giving them a secure upbringing?

Currently at $25/hr for a nanny share. All federal holidays off paid, 2 weeks paid vacation, and paid sick days.

I have met other nannies who make $30/hr for a share and $27/hr for a single child. They are usually working for families in the palisades or Georgetown.

That is great. I do those things too in my own home when necessary. I still don't think that's a good use of an advanced degree.

We pay our nanny - an American college graduate with teaching experience - $28 an hour plus healthcare and a car for one child. Definitely on the high end but she had what we wanted and is amazing.

That's ridiculous. You pay your nanny $58K a year plus a car? No wonder my sub-par direct report thinks she deserves to make $75k in her first year of professional office life.

Not at all ridiculous, PP. Our nanny is phenomenal. Our child is benefiting from her in ways I never imagined possible.

It always seemed insane to us that parents will spend big bucks on preschool and elementary school when the first three years of a child’s life are the most important.

And our nanny is 56 - not the entitled type you are referring to. She was a preschool teacher for 25 years and has a masters in ECE.

Money well spent!

Teaching is not a good use of an advanced degree?

Why is it ridiculous?

I made $62k last year as a nanny. No one is forcing anyone to hire a nanny. A nanny is a luxury expense. Daycare and other cheaper childcare are always an option.

Maybe you should’ve interviewed better and you wouldn’t have ended up with a sub-par employee.

Well let’s see, she’s making $50/hr...

Right, but for how long and how much job security is there in the nanny field? I didn't bust my butt off going to school forever to be someone's cook and wash their dishes. $50/hr isn't that much in the grand scheme of things especially in this area.

Teaching is great, but she's a nanny first not a teacher. Teachers don't cook, clean, and clean poopy butts. Complete waste.

You are assuming she is living in DC. And you clearly didn’t calculate what $50/hr comes out to. Most nannies are full time employees so she is looking at close to $100k a year. That’s a good amount for this area. Not to mention she said she was married. Unless you are part of a union no job is secure. Hey if you don’t cook for your family or clean your house that’s on you. You chose a different path and that’s working for you. This woman chose her path and seems to be doing very well.
