So you are a nanny, cook, and dishwasher? Good use of an advanced degree.

Stop embarrassing yourself, PP.

Honestly, it's true.

I have a PhD and still clean my own toilet and wash my own car. At work, I take turns making coffee and cleaning up the lab kitchen. DH is a dentist and often does the cleanings himself.

The PP makes lunch and teaches Mandarin. Is there a more important job than teaching children and giving them a secure upbringing?

That is great. I do those things too in my own home when necessary. I still don't think that's a good use of an advanced degree.

Teaching is not a good use of an advanced degree?

Teaching is great, but she's a nanny first not a teacher. Teachers don't cook, clean, and clean poopy butts. Complete waste.

Go to a preschool, or daycare center with certified teachers. So when you have kids and have to cook and clean their butts did you waste your life?

Also meant to add, go to a PEP class in an elementary school. The teachers have to change the diapers of SN kids.

Well let’s see, she’s making $50/hr...

Right, but for how long and how much job security is there in the nanny field? I didn't bust my butt off going to school forever to be someone's cook and wash their dishes. $50/hr isn't that much in the grand scheme of things especially in this area.

You are assuming she is living in DC. And you clearly didn’t calculate what $50/hr comes out to. Most nannies are full time employees so she is looking at close to $100k a year. That’s a good amount for this area. Not to mention she said she was married. Unless you are part of a union no job is secure. Hey if you don’t cook for your family or clean your house that’s on you. You chose a different path and that’s working for you. This woman chose her path and seems to be doing very well.

Listen, I know assistants who make over 100K. It’s all about what you can offer and the skills you have. Sometimes, people paying these salaries are not really paying such a premium for the care, they are paying for discretion, flexibility and good judgment.

Preschools, and I am talking about the top preschools, do not pay.

How is this relevant? Some still require certified teachers.

NP. I was a self-supporting nanny for years. Wanted to teach at an elite preschool, but all their teachers had to depend on spousal support, or take weekend jobs. I didn’t want the drop in my income for the privilege to teach in a school.

Seriously, stop your nonsense. Teachers absolutely change diapers, clean poopy butts and prepare meals in most preschools. And nannies don’t clean anymore than a teacher cleans her classroom.

Besides, who the hell are you to tell this nanny she is wasting her degree?! You clearly have issues, PP, to be so upset by a specialized nanny.

Because even the top preschools don’t pay half of what a nanny can make. I am the PP from above who has a nanny who was a certified preschool teacher for years. She earns twice as much with us.

All of this is great, but you don't need an advanced degree to be a preschool teacher. Ok anyway, this thread has been entertaining. This will be my last reply haha.

If you are working for MCPS you do need an advanced degree.

Thank God! I am sure the PP with the advanced degree is relieved that the arbitrator of career choices has left the building!
