Jealous of my teacher friends

Please, go volunteer in a school for just a few days and see what every teacher goes through. You will realize that that summer break is very needed and very well-earned!

Not to mention that sometimes the bathrooms are occupied when you have a chance to go. I barely drink anything throughout the day because I’m afraid I’ll have to use the bathroom.

OP here. Woah. Never ever did I say teachers didn't deserve their vacation time or don't work incredibly hard. It is definitely a job I could not do. I'm only jealous of that time off. I wish I could be home with my own kids during the summer!

Just wanted to clarify something. The summer/spring break/winter break is not vacation time. We are not paid for those days. Memorial day? Not paid. Labor day? Not paid. You probably get a few paid holidays right? Our pay is divided to give equal paychecks during the year but those days are not contract days so we do not get paid. Hence, not vacation.

It’s not vacation time. It’s unpaid leave.

Some are allowed to spread out their paychecks over 12 months. Its not unpaid leave as their contract is for 10 months. They can work summers if they want,

NP But When people think of vacation they generally think of paid time off work. Summer and spring break for teachers are nice to have time away from work, to be sure, but they should not be referred to as vacation as they are unpaid. Also many teachers have to find jobs during the summer to make ends meet. Most working professionals would not have to work a 2nd job during their vacation time. It’s a different situation.

OP you are right, it's awesome.

I work for a NoVa public school, we will get 10 weeks off this summer, three days at Thanksgiving, two straight weeks at Christmas, a week for spring break and all the federal holidays.

If the staff bathroom is occupied everyone I know just uses the students bathroom. NBD. And if it's urgent they just get the neighbor teacher to cover the class for a few minutes.

Yes, pay is stretched out all year, which is great because I know people who work in other school divisions in other states where that is not the case, they have to save up for the unpaid summer months.

The last month or two of school can be quite grueling with standardized testing and some kids randomly losing the behavioral gains they seem to have made during the year, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Finally, teachers do not have to "find their own subs" they just put in for a sub and that's it. I work with people who are taking days off now just for the heck of it, personal me days, because they have the leave to do it.

It's a great job schedule and vacation wise, although it's not for everybody because teaching is tough and the pay is not comparable to many other professions. But I wouldn't trade with any of you.

It isn't though. When I jad a corporate job, I was paid for my vacation. I'm not complaining, I love teaching, but the fact is that the "vacation time" we supposedly get is not actually vacation time. I get 3 personal days that I can take as paid vacation all year. I understand that and I signed the contract knowing that. Summer break? Not vacation.

Ok, when I was a teacher we received 10 paychecks per year, 1 per month for 10 months. I did not receive a paycheck in the summer. That is why I refer to it as unpaid because I was not paid.

I'm a teacher. Having summers off is awesome and I love it. Other parts of the job are not awesome.

and to add on to my own comment here, I get 12 leave days that I can use either as sick days or personal days during the school year, in addition to all the holidays and breaks.
