This is not a huge overreaction. Imagine if this was your 6 year old? I would be livid. Imagine a slur that is so hurtful that it remains with you for life. This is not a small deal. I've been called racial slurs and believe me, I remember every instance. Parents need to do a better job of talking about race with their children and that this is not OK. I talk to my son often and tell him that racial slurs, hurtful language against physically disabled and others are things that I will not tolerate. Don't sweep this under the rug. It needs to be discussed early and often. We are at an EOTR Title I school, and they do an excellent job of promoting cultural awareness and kindness. I have no experience with schools in the upper NW, but do they do the same? And I'm not talking about just during Black History Month but throughout the year.

I know people who do all that with their kids, and once or twice their kids have said an awful racial slur. Much less likely to happen as the kids get older, of course. A small kid may hear an older kid say it once, and latch on to it, no matter what the parents tell the younger kid, and then he/she uses it later.

Except that a racial slur was not actually used, according to the school (presumably based on what others there said). The grandfather is telling the media that the n-word was used, again based on second-hand reports.

As for the thread title burying the lede, that is what the grandfather emphasized.

And meanwhile the media is writing about this, not the poor kid in the other thread chased to the metro by teenagers. Now that is a threat more worthy of external attention.

Of course the schools WOTP do that too!

Not for anything but the Post has the most basic fact wrong: this happened on Tuesday, not Monday. I question a lot of what people are claiming if they can't even get the day correct.

Riddle me this: how does Michael Eric Dyson know a racial slur was used? He posted on his Twitter account that he was heading to the school after a 6 year old called his grandson the N-word. He was heading to the school.

The principal said no slur was used, so we can surmise the principal didn't tell Mr. Dyson otherwise over the phone. And his grandson is 6 years old, so I doubt he has his own cell phone to call his granddad outside of the gazing eyes of the attentive administration.

So, how then does Dyson know his son was called an N-word before he even arrived at the school?

It isn't even 2nd hand reports that the N word was used. He started the reports!

This. This. This.

Calling someone the N-word is completely unacceptable and warranting of repercussions. Falsely accusing someone of calling someone the N-word likewise deserves repercussions.

This thread sickens me. So now the 6 year old and Mr. Dyson are the bad guys and the kid that threatened to bring a gun to shoot the 6 year old is the victim? This is Convington HS all over again. SMH.

Oh please. Because a 6-year old did something wrong (and he/she did), that doesn't forgive a grown-a$$ adult for shouting "FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!" in a crowded theater.

I expect the child will learn more from this incident than the adult will, and that's sickening too.

It is possible that his grandson told the teachers this information, and that it was relayed by the child's parents to Dyson.

Possible, but it doesn't fit with what we know. This all happened yesterday. The principal wrote that no epithet was used. Dyson tweeted that he was driving to school upon the incident being reported by the principal.

I would like someone to ask directly about this.

Why not possible? The incident happens, the child tells the parents, the parents call famous granddad and relay the information including the racial epithet, and famous granddad heads to school after hearing their account of the incident.

Why do we assume the principal knows better than the kid what exactly was said?

Do you think the 6 yo admitted to using that word?

Also, can we get back to the threat of killing someone?

I think the threat of gun violence is the greater concern, regardless of specific language used.

6 is pretty young for standard school discipline to be meaningful but that kid needs to get with a social worker ASAP. That's pretty messed up.

Why is everyone brushing pass the fact that he threatened to bring a gun?? That needs to have SERIOUS consequence.
