The organization, no. The pact, mostly. If my child goes to the overnight or anywhere a parent is almost always there. |
But more people have been accused since 2005.
No I do not trust the BSA. My FIL was molested and then outcast in his community when he came forward. The damage has been done to our family, the effects are lifelong. |
Where did you read about accusations since 2005? The scouts have a mandatory 2-deep policy which means that no adult is allowed to be alone with the boys. That doesn't mean abuse still doesn't happen, but when my kids were in the scouts, the policy was heavily enforced. |
CNN says the list runs from 1944 until 2016. Unlike the Catholic church, the BSA does immediately oust anyone who has been accused and blacklists them from any scouting group nationwide. The scandal involves not notifying the authorities which is indeed a scandal. |
+1 The very first badge my kid was required to do dealt with sexual abuse. He was 6 and learned what sexual abuse is, what is good and bad behavior, what to do if you're in danger, how to tell someone. Lots of examples. Quite explicit and painful for me to do with my Tiger Cub Scout. But it was well-prepared material and they're taking it seriously. |
Multiple sources refer to “an unknown number” of cases since 2005, including boys who are still minors.

If you read this piece (which is hard because of the massive number of ads they won't let you block), it says the accusations are new but the events occurred at least a decade ago, if not longer. |
OMG |
The victims are still minors, so even if it was a decade ago, it’s still more recent than 2005, and the boys were 6-7 years old. Go ahead and trust them with your son, I do not trust them with mine. |
They are not "being more transparent," the info was made public and they are screwed and they know it.
Nope, don't trust any organization that discriminates against others (which they did until very recently), don't trust them because of the money grab they made allowing girls in just when they know they are going to go down in flames, don't trust organizations that cover up their mistakes for decades, possibly centuries. For girls who don't like girl scouts for some reason, start your own troop and do it your way. My DD is in HS and in a troop that is a perfect fit for her. The troops are very leader dependant, so if you don't like a particular troop, find one you do like or start your own! |
Oh please! Read the damn article before you start in with the O-M-G. The list goes back to the 1940s. Most of the people are probably dead and buried. There are not 70 active scout leaders who are molesters. |
This covers incidents from 1947 to January 2005. That is it ends 14 years ago. My kid is a Maryland scout and definitely has had a lot of training on sexual abuse (as someone mentioned upthread, it's a required badge), and I feel comfortable with his troop. It's a great experience for him. |
I can’t believe people are on here defending the organization. SMDH |
Your child is just as likely to be molested by a sports coach. Educating your child is the key here. Not banning him from some organization he probably doesn't want to join anyway. Why not just say you don't like camping. |
