Nanny Cost?

Anonymous
A decent nanny will cost between $22-27/hr plus benefits and employer taxes. She will handle children’s laundry, all pick-ups/drop offs, sick days, school holidays, summer vacation, etc.

We have consistently found very good (and legal) Nannies in the $16 range for Montgomery county. This was the rate for two kids.

That’s just nuts! How does a grown adult live on that in Montgomery County? Sharing couches to sleep on?

Here’s the thing...MoCo families are cheap. Every single MoCo family I interviewed with wanted to pay a low wage and then expected extra services on top of that. I live in MoCo and didn’t want to commute. However, after seeing how delusional the families were, I stick to DC and just deal with the commute.

Very good is subjective.

Probably someone without working papers, at that price.

This is incorrect. Our nanny is $15/hour and we pay taxes and give her 2 weeks paid vacation and one week sick leave. Shes legal resident with 25 years of experience. She doesn't drive, so OP might pay more for driving. Shes amazing

It's 33k/year. A gs7 has to have bachelor's and a year of experience and gets paid $47K.

Umm...that makes it ok? Ppl will find anything to justify their bad behavior and decisions.

Hope she has someone to support her, because your 15/hr doesn’t.

Hold up, you hired someone with 25 yrs of experience for $15/hr. Does that even sound like a smart person or a person with actual experience. Was she working for $5/hr when she started working as a nanny?!

This is the reality. We had a nanny for two infants (twins), legal, all payroll taxes paid, $20/hr starting salary, Montgomery County. We needed 50 hours a week to keep to cover our full time work hours and commute. Over 40 hours is time and a half in Montgomery County (i.e $30/hour). Plus two weeks paid vacation and sick/emergency days. Every reputable and experienced nanny in this area expects one extra week of salary at the holidays. There are other extras, putting her on the car insurance if you want to drive, paying payroll service or account etc. It is expensive. I had no luck searching all the usual venues to find a reliable nanny that you would trust with a baby for less. We did it for three years before moving to full time preschool.

I also work from home (and that makes it a bit tougher, honestly - some people won't be interested but I always figured those were the ones who wanted to stare at their phone all day or otherwise slack off). Like you though, that enabled us to do a straight 40 hours which really helps on the cost because you don't get into overtime. We used a payroll service that cost less than $1000 per year if I recall correctly. I think the added benefit of being able to help with older kid pickups etc. would make it well worth it for you. We have a minimum of three weeks off but only one was her choice, two were ours. We also offered 5 (use it or lose it) sick days but she used only one sick day in the 3.5 years she was with us.

How did you find your nanny? I'm in Vienna, WAH most days, and if I successfully get pregnant with a second kid I would want a nanny like you describe.

The conversation is meaningless unless you specify how many kids, whether it includes light housekeeping duties or not, and which area. I can assure you what nannies can get in NW is higher than cities like Manassas. A quick look in sittercity or care dot com will give you a wide range too, based on the nannies’ experience or qualifications.
I paid $10 more each hour for the same one toddler for a nanny in her 50s over a 24 year old who was a so so nanny. Same kid, same duties. Both high school grads, both citizens, but oh so different in good judgment, anticipating logistics or what a mom needed, proactiveness in childcare matters, communication and basic level of smartness. The one I paid $10 more had finished raising her kids, but also had recent experience caring for her 2 year old grandchild, was very engaging with the child and enjoyed taking him places proactively, who kept the kitchen spotless, decluttered play areas and organized kids clothes after each season, always remembered to put on sunscreen, and so on. I could delegate to her and it would be done. The 24 year old, I had to frequently remind, monitor, what not. It was my inexperience with hiring nannies that made me stay with the younger one for over a year. When I found the older one, life was so much easier. I’m not saying all 24 year olds are like this, just that there is a wide range of nannies out there. Oh, that same nanny in her previous job was getting paid $5 less than I was paying her to take care of infant twins! The location was PG county though. She crossed the river over to Nova and found me, someone who’d pay higher rate for fewer kids. Location matters too.

We pay 18 and have good person. Have in the past too. We have also used more than on agency to hire and told 17-20 is the norm.

+1

McLean too. One first generation family I know demanded the nanny to wear a uniform (not a polo and khakis, but an actual pinstripe nanny uniform with bib), and they would pay her $10/hour for three kids - always extra demands. Including one baby, one infant, plus all the driving and organizing that older kids entail. No paid vacations, no health care, no taxes, nothing. Another family was majorly involved in local big name business ("what is in your wallet") and have many, many children - all with their own nanny, and pay $30/hour.

OP, some people are cheap and want something for nothing because they are entitled, but not rich. Some people are loaded and have money to give away. Guess who the nannies want to work for?
