Average rate for a decent nanny in this area is maybe $20-30/hr.
The conversation is meaningless unless you specify how many kids, whether it includes light housekeeping duties or not, and which area. I can assure you what nannies can get in NW is higher than cities like Manassas. A quick look in sittercity or care dot com will give you a wide range too, based on the nannies’ experience or qualifications. I paid $10 more each hour for the same one toddler for a nanny in her 50s over a 24 year old who was a so so nanny. Same kid, same duties. Both high school grads, both citizens, but oh so different in good judgment, anticipating logistics or what a mom needed, proactiveness in childcare matters, communication and basic level of smartness. The one I paid $10 more had finished raising her kids, but also had recent experience caring for her 2 year old grandchild, was very engaging with the child and enjoyed taking him places proactively, who kept the kitchen spotless, decluttered play areas and organized kids clothes after each season, always remembered to put on sunscreen, and so on. I could delegate to her and it would be done. The 24 year old, I had to frequently remind, monitor, what not. It was my inexperience with hiring nannies that made me stay with the younger one for over a year. When I found the older one, life was so much easier. I’m not saying all 24 year olds are like this, just that there is a wide range of nannies out there. Oh, that same nanny in her previous job was getting paid $5 less than I was paying her to take care of infant twins! The location was PG county though. She crossed the river over to Nova and found me, someone who’d pay higher rate for fewer kids. Location matters too.
