What is the state flagship of Pennsylvania?

I can’t let this NY convo continue. Growing up in NY Binghamton is regarded as the beat. Toss up between SUNY buffalo and Albany after that. Maybe Stoneybrook after that?

Flagship isn't the same as highest ranking. Often, that's true, but not always.

Penn State is definitely Pennsylvania's flagship.

Right. Like Georgia, for example? GT is higher ranked than UGA, but UGA is the flagship.

What about states like Arizona- is the flagship ASU or U of A? How about New York? Does it even have a flagship? Indiana University vs. Purdue?

New York has Cornell.

Cornell is private. A state flagship generally refers to a state's highest ranking public. Like University of Texas is the state flagship of Texas.

Wrong. Half of Cornell is public. In-state students pay public college tuition.

Um...only at the Ag school. But NY has 4 main large research universities, not 1: Albany, Binghamton, Stony Brook, Buffalo.

Nope, also the College of Human Ecology and College of Labor Relations. But Cornell isn't considered the state flagship. The public colleges at Cornell are land grant institutions.

Look, I'm from NY also. Yes, Binghamton has had the best reputation, but it's not a flagship.

NY does not have a flagship. There is no large center for R & D that is state funded. Cornell does not count (it is a hybrid of state/private).

Pitt, PSU and Temple are all considered the Tier 1 public schools in Pennsylvania. There are a number of others that are considered Tier 2 like Slippery Rock, IUP, Bloomsburg to name a few.

University of Arizona.

But Arizona State is better in almost all majors and as a whole.

Not a Penn State grad, but Penn State is the quintessential college town. Being in a vibrant college town is not the boonies.

+1 I would 1000x rather go to school in a college town like State College than in the middle of a busy urban area like Pitt or Temple. Different strokes...

(not a Penn State grad or affiliated with the school, FWIW, but just in general.)

The ranking of the school has nothing to do with which school is the flagship. Penn State is most definitely the Pennsylvania state flagship school. Pitt and Temple are both funded differently so neither of them are the flagship. And as with any battle group, there can only be one flagship.
