Potential Holding Centers for Northwood

From the presentation linked above:

Project Timeline
•Initial phase of Woodward HS to prepare for high school beginning in fall 2020
•Students relocate to Woodward the 2023–2024 school year
•Two year construction of Northwood HS facility
•Students return to Northwood HS September 2025
•Final site work activities continue at Northwood HS through summer 2026
•Woodward re-opens in September 2025 as a comprehensive high school

Do people think Northwood will become a more desirable DCC choice after the renovation?

I do. The facility had been one of the main drawbacks to Northwood when we did the DCC open houses a couple years ago.

Cool, we are zoned for it but wouldn't have a child attend until after it is renovated

At today's Facilities and Boundaries work session, these are the commercial sites being analyzed by MCPS:

One Discovery Place
Discovery warehouse on Kennett Street
Washington Adventist Hospital

in addition to the MCPS-owned Rocking Horse and Broome sites.

Some board members are interested in reconsidering keeping students on site during construction.

Those are interesting options. What room is available at the Washington Adventist Hospital site?

I am not sure what the BOE is thinking about with that. Why would they subject the school population to a 5 year construction cycle when there are other options? Keeping them onsite seems like the worst choice.

Agreed. I think by the end of the meeting they weren't thinking that was a good option to keep on the table.

The hospital is moving to a new building on Plum Orchard Drive in August.

My DC was choosing a HS the year the Wheaton building was due to open, it was definitely on student's minds. When my younger DC was at the same point three years later, we were told the popularity of Wheaton was way up, and the energy at the open house would support that. I'd think the same will happen for Northwood, especially since their MCC program will be reaching maturity, too.

Busing from Northwood to Woodward seems like a pretty terrible idea. Isn't that like 40+ minute commute each way in traffic for kids? That's half-way across the county.

According to the presentation posted by the OP, it is 6.9 miles (20-25 minutes) one way.

I doubt traffic will be an issue in the morning, but evening probably will be.

Google Maps says 16-24 in the morning and 18-35 in the afternoon.
