| What about Northwood? |
| You need to look for a well-rounded high school that has good football, and that usually is what makes school spirit present. My Dd is at Wootton and DH and I have never been to a football game, I think Dd has gone a few times. Our friends(the parents!) who live in Lakelands go to every game and went to the state championship in Annapolis! It is such a different experience. |
| Def Einstein, especially during Homecoming they build these awesome class floats. |
My kids aren't in high school yet, but when they go next year they'll go to Wooten. However, my niece & nephews go to WJ and one of my nephews is on the football team & they really have such amazing school spirit, I was blown away. I have to say, I was really pleasantly surprised to see how excited & involved the student body was at games & pep rallies. I guess because I went to a small high school, I never really knew what I was missing until I went to my nephew's games. My sister told me that one of the contributing factors of the student body being so involved, is that they have spirit week quite often at WJ (ie; Monday = dress in WJ green, Tuesday = wear your favorite team jersey or shirt, Wednesday = dress as your favorite kind of wildcat, etc). She was under the impression that other high schools may have spirit week once or twice a year, but I think she said that WJ has spirit week at least once a month? I'm really hopeful that Wooten's student body is involved when it comes to school spirit... does anyone know? |

The AD at Blair has been working on the school spirit issue for the last 4 or 5 years.
She seems to have the support of the principal. I would say she made lots of progress at first. At this point, I think her biggest problem is turn over of coaches. She does a reasonable job recruiting coaches but as soon as they figure out how to do the job, they find better opportunities. Someone else suggested, the diversity of a school puts a cap on spirit. Anyone who attended one of the Sankofa performances last week, knows this is not true. But it could be Blair's size that allows smaller groups to be satisfied with their level of spirit and prevents whole school spirit level from taking off. |

OP here.
how do you think diversity puts a cap on school spirit? My Howard County school was one of the diverse ones (not the rich white ones) and we had lots of schools spirit. Everyone at my school spoke the same language though. Was not like 40%+ hispanic like some of the silver spring schools |
| and by high school everyone knows how to speak english of course, but I don't know if it's a cultural thing to have conversations in Spanish in those schools or not |
And sports. |

school spirits arise when
(i) your school is doing well (or at least, not bad) in that field. (ii) there is a rival school that you have to work hard to beat. |
| DS visited three DCC HS open houses this past fall and he felt that Einstein had so much school spirit. It was like attending a pep rally and there were so many performances and outgoing students raving about the school. |
At Blair, the diversity is an integral piece of the school spirit. Kids are proud to be at the most diverse school in the state, and of the opportunities they have as a result. |
BCC and WJ have great school spirit, but not so much Churchill, and ESPECIALLY not Wootton, sorry PP My DD is at Wootton and she has been to 1-2 football games in the past 3 years(she's a junior), and when she went there were maybe 10 kids total. Kinda sad IMO, but at least it has good ratings!

| Not part of the DCC but Sherwood has a lot of school spirit. |
Wootton parent here. No kids are not into football anymore. There was a fatal drunk driving incident with a football player and parents that provided the alcohol a few years ago. The parents providing alcohol were very brazen about it too. The amazing, wonderful principal Dr Doran who created so much school spirit, was loved by all the kids, and made Wootton an amazing place died suddenly of heart attack a few weeks later. It really effected the community. Parents are hyper aware of what their kids are doing now and much stricter about letting them go out if they don't know the parents/where they will be. Many parents wont let their kids go to football games. Its good that the parents who provide alcohol are shunned by the community but its created a level of distrust that is unfortunate. Without Dr Doran the school has had a hard time rebuilding school spirit. |
Although BCC and WJ are about as far downcounty as any school, they aren't part of the DCC. BCC was supposed to be part of the DCC but the BCC community went bananas and put a stop to that. Churchill is known as a bastion of aggressive white nationalists with a reputation for bullying. I'd avoid the segregated schools. Very little kindness or compassion in those parts. |
