I'm in the DCC and a long way away from having high school age kids, but one thing that kind of bugs me about the schools is I've never read much on here about any of those schools having really great school spirit.
I went to a high school in Howard County with great school spirit. We took pride in our teams that competed for state championships or represented our school in other ways. Which high schools in the DCC or Silver Spring do you think have the best school spirit? With a cursory skimming of recent sports results, as far as I know there aren't any schools that are dominating in terms of sports. (Or are there?) I know that Wheaton and Blair have had success at difference science/math/it's academic type competitions, but don't know how much this contributes to school pride. PS Obligatory disclaimer: No posts like "move to bethesda" please and thanks. I am content with our options in terms of academics at these schools. |

For example, the last DCC schools to win state championships in soccer were:
Kennedy (89-90, 78-79) Blair (75-76) https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/departments/athletics/sports/Soccer%20(Boys)%20Team%20Champions.pdf |
| This isn’t really an area where people choose public schools based on sports. |
That is just one factor that can contribute to school spirit. |
| I’ve had kids at Einstein and Blair. I think Einstein has more school spirit, but Einstein is definitely a school that emphasizes participation over winning. |
Is that another way of saying that in most cases it does not win
|
| QO seems to be the only school in MCPS that has that traditional rah rah school spirit around sports. Its way out in Gaithersburg though so probably not an option for moving if the SS location works for your commute. |
| Blair has a great math team I hear. |
|
I only have experience with Blair, but my experience is that students have a ton of school pride, but not for sports. Whether that's more or less "school spirit" than other DCC schools, I don't know.

And Quiz Bowl team. And Science winners. And an award-winning newspaper. And award-winning documentarians. But sports? Not so much (although they did have a run of it in bocce...) https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/athletics/programs/default.aspx?id=372983 |

I have a friend who teaches at Blair, and she said both it and Einstein have more school pride than the other DCC high schools. She attributed that to the SMAC and VAC, respectively.
And as for participation vs. winning, I'll take a school that supports the former any day. |
| In all honesty I think the “school spirit” we remember from our childhoods was kind of dependent on our schools being very homogenous. |
| My Blair kid has a lot of Blair pride...but she has never been to a football game.. |
Well, Damascus, but... Wheaton has “Ain’t no beatin’ Wheaton!” So that’s something. DH graduated from AEHS in 1994 and still has the “Titan pride,” but I don’t know if the current students do as much. |

Yeah demascus is a football powerhouse. Must be lots of school spirit there.
I saw that the bethesda schools regularly win soccer championships. Do they have school spirit? Just curious Good to know about Blair and Einstein |
