UMD - Freshman Connection

I doubt UMD is trying to play “stats” game. Pool for spring admit is not nearly as big and a lot of these kids have high stats. They are not enough to bring down UMD stats.

I assume it is to protect their reported stats. By admitting the lower stat kids for the spring semester they don't count in the reported statistics for Fall entrants.
I just speculating and have no actual knowledge.

Yes this is it..

That’s just not true. Sounds like it should be but it’s not. My son went FC and his two friends were admitted for fall. My son had higher stats on both SAT and GPA. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is not the reason although this might partially be an unintended result.

The reason for it is the same as why other schools like UC Berkeley do it.

At these large state schools, a large number of students graduate in the Fall semester i.e. Winter graduation. This means there's a lot of spots in the university open in the Spring, and thus Spring enrollment is lower than Fall enrollment

To keep enrollment numbers stable throughout the semesters, they allow some students to enroll in the Spring. These students may actually have higher scores than Fall-semester admits, but may have not gotten in for other reasons i.e. from an over-represented county like Montgomery county, lack of extracurriculars, etc.

Also, I am on a UMD parents FB page and the parents of FC kids have complained that they thought their kids would get extra help and support from UMD but did not.

Good luck to your child!

My DH teaches at least one FC class a year and really likes them. For whatever reason, he says that on the whole, the FC students are more engaged and serious than students in his other 100-level classes. Teaching in the early evening is not his favorite, but since our own kids are older, it's not an issue for us.

I have never heard that UMd promises more help and support for FC students, but all the usual supports are available to them like any other student. The classes do tend to be smaller, so they can actually get to know the professors better if they put in the effort.

My cousin was in the FC program. Kids can't live on campus so little to no community. She's from MOCO so basically it was a great opportunity for her to have an off campus apartment and throw parties for all her hs friends stuck on campus.

FC students CAN live on campus if they enroll by May 1. They are not required to. https://oes.umd.edu/incoming-current-visiting-students/freshmen-connection

Thank you. Finally someone who actually knows what they are talking about (and is not blowing smoke out their own ass like everyone else).

Oh, I guess someone posted what you believe, so they win the prize. that is not the objective of crowdsourcing questions.

Sure it is. By asking a large number of people, we got one to respond who has the specific knowledge to answer it. Everyone else should be disregarded because they didn't know the answer.

I thought I heard that some freshman connection classes were smaller than the regular equivalent. One good thing about spring admit is that you don't have to commit till November. But that's if you don't opt for FC first semester.
